Discerning networks
Since the beginning of the 21st century, the Colombian region of Urabá, that borders Panama, has gained notoriety for the transit of people moving from Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean to North America. Using an ethnographic approach, this article examines how the accounts of local bureaucrats and other actors in the region frame these movements within the influence of 'redes,' that is, networks, a vague reference to the hold illegal armed actors …

This article explores the life and work of Venezuelan migrants in the Colombia/Venezuela border neighborhood of La Parada, in the Colombian municipality of Villa del Rosario, Department of Norte de Santander. Documents and Shifting Labor Environments Among Undocumented Migrant Workers in Northern California
This article explores the ways in which migrant workers establish particular relations to the state in shifting environments of criminalization and stigmatization that change the geography and nature of undocumented labor in the United States. Centering on Northern California, I address the results of the economic downturn between 2007 and 2009 for undocumented migrant men who had established jobs and paid taxes using fake Social Security cards, …

This article explores the distinction between economic and forced migration by following three Guatemalan day labourers in northern California who “discover” the possibility of asylum after coming to the US as undocumented migrants. Vaguely understood as “ some sort of help for Guatemalans,” asylum acquires a confusing assortment of meanings for these men as they hear about it from other migrants and local NGO s. This article explores the everyday life of “undocumented” immigrants working as day laborers on the streets of Northern California by looking at the formal and informal practices of documentation that shape their lives. Through the use of IDs issued by NGOs and other institutions, the immigrants in these pages live and work without formal recognition.
