  • Hagbard’s Gallows in context

    Open Access•Peter Skoglund, Marta Díaz-Guardamino et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2026

The Bronze Age monument known as Hagbard’s Gallows in Sweden is a combination of monumental standing stones, rock art and mounds. A new research project uses optically stimulated luminescence and radiocarbon dating techniques to investigate the monument’s chronology.

  • The landscape of the Zanj Rebellion? Dating the remains of a large-scale agricultural system in southern Iraq

    Open Access•P J Brown, Jaafar Jotheri et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2025•Referências: 15

A system of abandoned ridge/earthwork features covers a large swathe of the Shaṭṭ al-cArab floodplain in southern Iraq, standing as testament to a period of agricultural expansion in the past. Until now, the chronology of these features has been surmised from limited textual evidence that relates their construction to slave labour during the early Islamic period associated with the 'Zanj rebellion'. This article presents the first absolute dates …

  • A Mismatched Piece in a Cultural Middle Stone Age Puzzle

Open Access•Grzegorz Michalec, Eric Andrieux et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2024•Citada por: 1•Referências: 86

This article presents the results of research carried out at two previously unreported Eastern Desert Atbara River project (EDAR) Middle Stone Age (MSA) sites—EDAR 134 and EDAR 155. Luminescence dating results indicate human activity in this area during the Marine Isotope Stage 5 period (MIS 5), approximately 90 kya. Discussion concerning the affiliation of both analyzed inventories will be provided, including another MSA site from the EDAR area,…

  • The Middle Stone Age in the Eastern Desert. Edar 135 — a buried early MIS 5 horizon from Sudan

Open Access•Maciej Ehlert, Ju Yong Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•2022•Citada por: 2•Referências: 57

Middle Stone Age (MSA) lithic artefacts coming from dated layers preserved in their original stratigraphic position are still rare in Northeast Africa in general and in Sudan in particular. This paper aims to present the results of technological and functional analyses of an assemblage coming from a stratigraphic context, i.e. the upper level of the EDAR (Eastern Desert – Atbara River) 135 site, discovered in an abandoned gold mining pit in the S…

  • A Window into the Early–Middle Stone Age Transition in Northeastern Africa—A Marine Isotope Stage 7a/6 Late Acheulean Horizon from the Edar 135 Site, Eastern Sahara (Sudan)

Open Access•Grzegorz Michalec, Marzena Cendrowska et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2021•Citada por: 8•Referências: 48

This paper presents the results of the analysis of a late Acheulean horizon from the EDAR 135 site, which was discovered in the Eastern Desert, Sudan, in an area heavily transformed by modern mining activity. A lithic assemblage was discovered there, within a layer of gravel sediments formed by a paleostream in a humid period of the Middle Pleistocene. This layer is OSL dated between 220 12 and 145 20 ka (MIS 7a/6). These dates indicate that the …

  • Gold Miners on the Trail of the Earliest Humans in Eastern Saharan Africa. Investigating the Acheulean and Middle Stone Age in Sudanese Nubia

Open Access•Mirosław Masojć, Ahmed Nassr et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2021•Citada por: 8•Referências: 13

This research note presents evidence for the oldest Middle Pleistocene Eastern Saharan human activity from the area referred to as the Eastern Desert Atbara River ( EDAR ), Sudan, which is currently threatened by gold mining. Preliminary results of multifaceted analyses indicate the activity of Homo sapiens during MIS 5 as well as Homo erectus during MIS 7–11 or earlier

  • Taphonomy of an excavated striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) den in Arabia

    Open Access•Mathew Stewart, Eric Andrieux et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2021•Citada por: 8•Referências: 88

Studies of modern carnivore accumulations of bone (i.e., neo-taphonomy) are crucial for interpreting fossil accumulations in the archaeological and paleontological records. Yet, studies in arid regions have been limited in both number and detailed taphonomic data, prohibiting our understanding of carnivore bone-accumulating and -modifying behavior in dry regions. Here, we present a taphonomic analysis of an impressive carnivore-accumulated bone a…
