Cabeza de Vaca and the Sixteenth-Century Copper Trade in Northern Mexico
Descriptions of Indians in northern Mexico with copper artifacts occur in the sixteenth-century expedition reports of Cabeza de Vaca, Francisco Ibarra, and Father Rodríguez. The phrasing of Cabeza de Vaca's account indicates that both copper bells and plates were excavated from abandoned villages and then traded widely. Statements given in all three journals point to the site of Paquimé, or Casas Grandes, in Chihuahua as the most probable source.…
Sails in Aboriginal Mesoamerica
This study reviews the archaeological and ethnohistorical evidence for aboriginal sail in the Maya area. Most of the paper concentrates on Thompson's (1951) argument, which relied on eyewitness reports of sails as well as on the appearance of words for sail in the Motul Dictionary. Thompson's evidence is found to be either equivocal or based on mistranslation of the original Spanish. Furthermore, his linguistic argument fails to support his case.…

Papers on the Prehistory of Northeastern Mexico and Adjacent Texas
The papers bound in this volume are selected from a series of presentations given in the sessions on archaeology at the meeting held in Monterrey, May 23-26, 1975, to celebrate the opening of the northeastern Mexico regional branch of the Instituto Nacional de Anthropologia e Historia. The theme of that conference was "The Archaeology and History of Northeastern Mexico and Texas
Pre-Columbian Old World Coins in America
Does the occasional find of a Roman, Greek, or Hebrew coin in America indicate ancient transoceanic contact? In this study, 40 reports of such coins are analyzed in order to determine whether any can support the diffusionist position. Discovery dates, minting periods, geographical distribution, and the absence of prehistoric context all suggest that the coins were lost very recently. For those who argue that coins found in fields and farmyards ma…
The Alleged Diffusion of Hindu Divine Symbols into Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica
Parallels between certain religous symbols in Hindu and Mesoamerican cultures have been drawn by three modern writers and adduced as evidence suggestive of trans-Pacific diffusion of Hindu influences dating to about the mid-1st millennium A.D. and later. The symbols concerned are those of the deities of the lunar asterisms and the planets-the naksatra and navagrahah series, respectively-of the Hindus as compared with the structural features and s…

The Burin-Faceted Projectile Point
A series of Paleo-Indian and Archaic projectile points with burin facets at either the proximal or distal end is described. Most of the points come from Texas. The burin facets appear to be intentional products of the burin technique, used either for the production of burins and burin spalls, or for modifying the shape of the point itself. Paleo-Indian point types with burin facets include Clovis, Cumberland, Folsom, Plainview, Meserve, Angostura…

Burins from Texas
Burins have recently been discovered in several Texas sites, in Central Texas, associated with Angostura points and in the Trans-Pecos area, in a Desert Culture context. A few parallels are seen with Alaskan burins. The data indicate that in Texas, burins are part of the paleo-Indian and Archaic complexes. There is also a possibility that they were made as late as the 16th century along the Rio Grande.Burins have been considered a significant tra…
Dating the Ulua Polychrome Complex
Distinctive polychromes from the Ulua valley, northwestern Honduras, formerly dated from possibly Early Classic to the conquest, are restricted to Late Classic. Ulua wares have Late Classic associations at Copan and other sites. A newly demonstrated Early Classic occupation of the Ulua valley is not found at the major polychrome sites. Plumbate is not associated with the Ulua complex and in northeastern Honduras it first appears in the Cocal hori…
