  • The incorporation of chlorine and cosmogenic 36 Cl into speleothem carbonate

    Open Access•Vanessa E Johnston, Silvia Frisia et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2024

Cave carbonate mineral deposits (speleothems) contain trace elements that are intensively investigated for their significance as palaeoclimate and environmental proxies. However, chlorine, which is abundant in marine and meteoric waters, has been overlooked as a potential palaeo-proxy, while cosmogenic 36 Cl could, in principle, provide a solar irradiance proxy. Here, total Cl concentrations analysed from various speleothems were low (3–14 mg/kg)…

  • High-resolution reconstruction of infiltration in the Southern Cook Islands based on trace elements in speleothems

Open Access•Mohammadali Faraji, Andrea Borsato et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2024

This study utilizes speleothem trace elements as climate proxies to reconstruct hydroclimate variability over approximately 350 years in the Southern Cook Islands. Stalagmites Pu17 and Pu4 from Pouatea cave were analyzed using high-resolution LA-ICP-MS for trace elements (Mg, Na, Sr, P, U, Y). By monitoring cave dripwater and conducting regression analysis, we found that Mg, Sr, and Na in Pouatea dripwater mostly originated from marine aerosols, …

  • The Ernesto Cave, northern Italy, as a candidate auxiliary reference section for the definition of the Anthropocene series

    Open Access•Andrea Borsato, Ian J Fairchild et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropocene Review•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 40

Annually laminated stalagmites ER77 and ER78 from Grotta di Ernesto provide an accurate annual record of environmental and anthropogenic signals for the last ~200 years. Two major transitions are recorded in the stalagmites. The first coincides with the year 1840 CE, when a change from porous and impurity-rich-laminae to clean, translucent laminae occurs. This is accompanied by a steady increase in the growth rate, a decrease in fluorescence and …

  • Holocene hydrological changes in Europe and the role of the North Atlantic ocean circulation from a speleothem perspective

Open Access•Attila Demény, Zoltán Kern et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2021

Societal concerns about future hydroclimate changes urge a thorough understanding of the governing processes. Here, an analysis of Middle and Late Holocene speleothem-based hydroclimate reconstructions and paleoclimate model simulations reveals sub-millennial fluctuations in the spatiotemporal variability of precipitation in the European and Mediterranean regions, that complements previous dendrochronological and pollen-based reconstructions with…

  • North Atlantic influences on climate conditions in East-Central Europe in the late Holocene reflected by flowstone compositions

Open Access•Attila Demény, Zoltán Kern et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2019

  • Holocene Climate Variability in Sicily from a Discontinuous Stalagmite Record and the Mesolithic to Neolithic Transition

Open Access•Silvia Frisia, Andrea Borsato et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2006

Fabric and stable isotopic composition of a Holocene stalagmite (CR1) from a cave in northern Sicily record changes in paleorainfall in the early Holocene. High δ 13 C stable isotope values in the calcite deposited from ca. 8500 to ca. 7500 yr ago are interpreted as reflecting periods of high rainfall. The wet phase was interrupted by two periods of multi-century duration characterized by relatively cool and dry winters centered at ca. 8200 and c…

  • Climate Forcings and Their Influence on Alpine History as Reconstructed Through the Application of Synchrotron‐based X‐ray Microfluorescence on Layered Stalagmites

Open Access•Silvia Frisia, Andrea Borsato et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2005•Referências: 25

Solar variability and volcanic activity strongly interact with climate and the environment. Synchrotron radiation X‐ray microfluorescence (micro‐XRF) to an annually laminated Alpine stalagmite confirmed that annual laminae result from hydrological variability and changes in the duration of soil microbial degradation. The latter is modulated by solar variability. At the centennial timescale, growth rate and solar activity appear to be correlated w…
