The Practice of War
The fact is that war comes in many guises and its effects continue to be felt long after peace is proclaimed. This challenges the anthropologists who write of war as participant observers. Participant observation inevitably deals with the here and now, with the highly specific. It is only over the long view that one can begin to see the commonalities that emerge from the different forms of conflict and can begin to generalize. [From the Introduct…

Contesting Visibility
Contesting Visibility: Photographic Practices on the East African Coast explores the complex and contested history of photography in East Africa, focusing on the period from the late 19th century to the present. Heike Behrend examines how photography has been used as a tool of representation, power, and identity formation by various actors, including colonial administrators, missionaries, tourists, and local photographers. The book analyzes a wid…
Resurrecting Cannibals
This is the first ethnography of the Uganda Martyrs Guild [UMG], a lay movement of the Catholic Church, and its organized witch-hunts in the kingdom of Tooro, Western Uganda. This book explores cannibalism, food, eating and being eaten in its many variations. It deals with people who feel threatened by cannibals, churches who combat cannibals and anthropologists who find themselves suspected of being cannibals. It describes how different African …

‘To Make Strange Things Possible’
‘To Make Strange Things Possible’
The Bakor Studio in Lamu, situated on one of the main streets of the Old Town, was established in the 1960s. The founder, Mr Omar Said Bakor, born in 1932, was a self-made man and brilliant bricoleur, who never went to school. Before opening the studio, he worked for ten years as a street photographer. Bakor's photographic montages may serve as examplars in the discussion of the complicated processes of the localisation and hybridisation of a new…
The Rise of Occult Powers, Aids and the Roman Catholic Church in Western Uganda
Taking as my example a lay organisation of the Roman Catholic Church, the Uganda Martyrs Guild, which entered the public domain in western Uganda in the 1990s and started to organise witch and cannibal hunts, I offer two arguments to the ongoing debate on the rise of occult forces in Africa. First, against the tendency to find the origin of the rise of occult forces in the invisible hand of capital, I relate the dramatic activation and rise of oc…

Photo Magic
In this contribution, I present a few examples of practices in present-day African Christian Churches in which photographs 'do magic' and are used to heal or harm. To counter a tendency, inherent in this topic, of exoticizing and othering, I not only give examples of African 'photo magic' but also include European ones, examples that in the 'standard' or 'official' histories of Western photography are missing. In addition, I try to work out the i…
Spirit Possession, Modernity and Power in Africa
Introduction - one or many modernities?, Heike Behrend and Ute Luig. Part 1 Power of the spirit, power of the possessed: defunct women possession among the Bijagos islanders, Alexandra de Sousa possession and power in the central Sudan - the case of the butcher's wife, Susan M. Alice Lakwena and the Holy Spirits
In August 1986, Alice Auma, a young Acholi woman in northern Uganda, proclaiming herself under the orders of a Christian spirit, raised an army called the 'Holy Spirit Mobile Forces' and with it waged a war, not only against the National Resistance Army of the government but also against internal enemies in the form of 'impure' soldiers, witches and sorcerers. She came close to her goal of overthrowing the government but was defeated and fled to …

Fragmented visions
Here Heike Behrend presents the works of two Ugandan photographers, Ronnie Okocha Kauma and Afanaduula Sadala, who have specialized in producing photo collages. The two have made these the sites of a visual recycling of images produced by the modern mass media. By localizing as well as domesticating the global flow of images they create a new space of wish‐fulfillment and imagination that allows their customers to participate in a world from whic…

Wondering with an Unending Wonder”
Stephen Greenblatt has shown that wonder was the central characteristic of the first European encounters with the New World and the decisive emotional and intellectual experience in the face of radical difference (Greenblatt 1994:27). Wonder, says Greenblatt, appears to be a category immune to all denial and ideological co-optation, and it exerts an irresistible force. It occurs in a moment when meanings are lacking and is accompanied by the frag…

Contesting Visibility
Since the introduction of photography by commercial studio photographers and the colonial state in Kenya, this global medium has been intensely debated and contested among Muslims on the cosmopolitan East African coast. This book does not only explore the making, circulation, and consumption of popular photographs, but also the other side, their rejection and obliteration, an essential aspect of a medium's history that should not be neglected. It…
