A face from the pre-Columbian Caribbean
Forensic facial approximation methods are implemented in bioarchaeology to visualise the appearances of individuals from the past. This study introduces the first three-dimensional (3D) facial approximation of a pre-Columbian individual from the Caribbean, and specifically from Cuba, with intentional cranial modification (ICM). The research team designed a pipeline based on verified methods and documented the steps followed to produce the facial …

Digitising the past, preserving the future
In 1903, the Berlin Museum of Ethnology commissioned Alfredo Jahn Hartman to conduct archaeological excavations in the Lake Valencia basin in Venezuela. Jahn explored two sites, Camburito and El Zamuro, where he unearthed pre-Columbian artefacts and human burials and subsequently sent them to Berlin. More than a century later, we digitised this collection following a detailed protocol to obtain scans with submillimetre accuracy reproducing the ge…
Shedding light on pre-Columbian crania collections through state-of-the-art 3D scanning techniques
During the 19 th and 20 th centuries, numerous museums, scientific societies, and royal academies were founded in Europe and America. In this scenario, the Anthropological Museum Montané was founded in Havana, Cuba. Its collection has grown over the years, thanks to researchers, antiquarians, and amateurs. Since its foundation, the Museum Montané has become an essential institution for anthropological and archaeological research in the region. No…
Tracing craniovascular traits in artificially modified pre‐Columbian crania from Cuba, the largest Caribbean archipelago
The impressions left by the vascular system on the surface of the skull, like those of the middle meningeal vessels, the dural venous sinuses, and the emissary veins, are a unique source of vascular and anatomical evidence when working with osteological collections, as is the case with bioarchaeological, forensic, and paleoanthropological investigations. Craniovascular features have been investigated in multiple modern human populations; however,…
Ontogenetic changes of diploic channels in modern humans
OBJECTIVES: The diploic channels are bony passages of veins, running within frontal, parietal, and occipital bones. In this study, we investigate ontogenetic changes of these channels in a sample of nonadult and adult modern humans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using computed tomography scans of dried crania, we provide quantitative comparisons of lumen size, branch length, volume, and vascular asymmetries, and correlations with age, cranial size, and …
Diploic vessels and computed tomography
OBJECTIVES: The diploic channels appear to be more developed in humans than in nonhuman primates, suggesting they may be relevant in evolutionary biology. This study is aimed at providing a segmentation procedure for diploic channels and CT analysis, a quantitative description of their variation in modern humans, and paleoanthropological case-studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CT data were used for the 2D and 3D visualization, rendering, and measure…
