Women in the Australian Baptist Denomination in Peace and War, 1920-1945
Exploring the roles and activities of Australian Baptist women is essential to present a complete history of the Australian Baptist denomination. Many historical narratives do not include women's work in the denomination despite their numerical dominance. This article provides a brief overview of women's work in their congregations and the broader denomination from 1920 to 1945. Women's organisations were important as a vehicle for women's minist…

Unjust Taxation and Popular Resistance
Historical materialism as a concept for understanding society, past, present and future, is under constant examination, by its adherents as much as by its opponents. Some of these discussions are stimulating, intellectually exciting and perhaps even useful for the definition of political strategies. Much space has been occupied
The Metamorphosis of a Medieval City
Why was there so little champart rent in medieval England
The reasons for the relative unimportance of champart (share-cropping) rent in medieval England are explored. An explanation is suggested in terms of the considerable power of the English landlord class: a class with great social control over an unfree peasantry, and which, therefore, was free to choose the most suitable form of rent. This was sometimes labour rent and sometimes money rent. The need for money was great, but there was no need to r…

Les tribunaux royaux
The Royal Courts Since they constituted the great majority of the population, the appearances of peasants were frequent in courts dealing with criminal cases (such as, murder, serious assault, burglary and theft of goods above a certain value). Their presence in non-criminal cases, such as disputes about land, debt, broken contract etc., was much less common. This was because, even in the thirteenth century, legal proceedings were expensive, even…

The English Rising of 1381
Reasons for inequality among medieval peasants
The stratification of the medieval peasantry cannot be attributed only to the markets in land and agricultural products. The division between the free and the unfree and between the holders of family subsistence holdings and inadequate smallholdings is found in periods of very low production for the market. The complex interplay between land availability, technical progress, inheritance and endowment customs, demands for rent and tax and the resi…
Medieval peasants
The study of the medieval peasantry should be made in terms of its role in European feudal society. This was a distinct social formation, so that comparisons with peasantries in capitalist society or under economic and political pressures from world imperialism, should be made with the utmost care. The internal constitution of the medieval peasantry is discussed in terms of the composition of the household and the social stratification of the pea…

We are now pleased to publish one further contribution. A Rejoinder by Professor Brenner will appear in a subsequent issue.

Feudalism and the Origins of Capitalism
In spite of preoccupation with the war, there began in 1940 a lively discussion among English Marxists about the origins of the capitalist mode of production, its political system and its culture. Seminal to this discussion was Christopher Hill's short book The English Revolution: 1640*, published for the tercentenary of the Long Parliament, the beginning of the end of England's ancien regime. Naturally the discussion did not get properly under w…

Towns in societies–medieval England
There is an old historical tradition which saw the towns in the middle ages as being an antagonistic element within the whole society which was seen—quite rightly of course—as being predominantly rural and agricultural. Put in more abstract terms the agrarian economy was seen as a natural economy and as such incompatible with the exchange economy of the towns. This simplistic vision could hardly stand the test of empirical investigation since cle…
