The Watinglo rockshelter provides an occupation record from the central north coast of New Guinea from 13 ka to the last few hundred years, with a hiatus in the later Holocene. In October 2022 an extensive archaeological landscape was identified by staff of the Vanuatu Cultural Centre at Pangpang on the east coast of Efate Island in central Vanuatu. It included midden deposits on the banks of the Pangpang River near the sea at Forari Bay where Lapita and Early Erueti‐style pottery sherds were recovered. Later Mangaasi‐style pottery was found nearby and further inland across much of the wider landscape. This is the only …

This study reports on new ceramic finds from the Murray Islands group in the Eastern Torres Strait. • Combined use of petrography (optical mineralogy) and portable X-Ray fluorescence has identified at least two sources for archaeological ceramics in the region. • Combined radiocarbon and U-Th dating of an early potsherd establishes ceramic manufacture and transport by at least 2600 years ago. • These findings provide new insights into the uptake …
