Applying Negotiation Theory to the Interrogation of Detainees
This article seeks to apply negotiation concepts to the interrogation of detainees. Specifically, Richard Walton and I worked on a project sponsored by the Intelligence Science Board (ISB) to develop protocols for interrogation that would take the high road and be true to our human values. We focus on “The Man in the Snow White Cell” — a true story that took place during the Vietnam War, with the arrest of a high-level intelligence officer (Tai) …
The 1960s Civil Rights Movement and Black Lives Matter
Today’s Black Lives Matter movement rests on the foundation of the civil rights movement of the 1960s and lessons from that earlier period are relevant to advancing racial justice today. Both movements provide rich material for understanding how social protests can be viewed as negotiation stories. This article uses a negotiations lens to (1) interpret key events and features of these two movements and (2) suggest how the current movement might b…

Kaiser Permanente is the largest managed care organization in the country. It also happens to have the largest and most complex labor-management partnership ever created in the United States. This book tells the story of that partnership-how it started, how it grew, who made it happen, and the lessons to be learned from its successes and complications. With twenty-seven unions and an organization as complex as 8.6-million-member Kaiser Permanente…

The New Competitors
Employee Involvement
Using a survey of workers in a large unionized manufacturing plant in which quality circles had been introduced without the involvement of the union, the authors test several hypotheses about the profiles of workers who volunteered to join the program and of workers who participated in it. They find that volunteers were less active in the union, more eager for a "say" in decisions, and more attracted to group and voluntary activities than were no…

The Effects of Corporate Strategy and Workplace Innovations on Union Representation
This paper explores the decline of union membership within partially organized firms. Using data from two Conference Board surveys of labor relations practices (1977 and 1983), the authors test a series of propositions concerning the effects of corporate industrial relations values and strategies and workplace innovations on union representation and membership. The results show that whereas the average firm reduced the number of workers represent…

Industrial Relations in Britain

Each chapter is an essay which brings together the most up-to-date theoretical and empirical work. Each focuses on trends over the past two or three decades, and says something about likely developments over the 1980s. The emphasis is on analysis and explanation, as …

Cost-Effectiveness of Alternative Strategies for Cut-Back Management
A recent symposium appearing in Public Administration Review, which explored organizational decline and cutback management, addressed an issue that seems to have grown in importance since the early 1970s.1 Despite the proliferation of organizational cutbacks, however, relatively little is yet known about their dynamics and administration.3 The authors' experience with the State of New York, which underwent a series of organizational retrenchments…
