Africa's wild C4 plant foods and possible early hominid diets
Suitability of Ostrich Eggshell for Radiocarbon Dating
Ostrich eggshell from archaeological sites remains largely free of more recent carbon contamination and as such is suitable material for radiocarbon dating. The carbonate fraction of the shell does, however, display an initial deficit in 14 C, which causes the ages to appear 180 ± 120 yr too old
Spatial Distribution of Radiocarbon Dates for the Iron Age in Southern Africa
Calibration of Radiocarbon Dates for the Late Pleistocene Using U/Th Dates on Stalagmites
Twenty paired 14 C and U/Th dates covering most of the past 50,000 yr have been obtained on a stalagmite from the Cango Caves in South Africa as well as some additional age-pairs on two stalagmites from Tasmania that partially fill a gap between 7 ka and 17 ka ago. After allowance is made for the initial apparent 14 C ages, the age-pairs between 7 ka and 20 ka show satisfactory agreement with the coral data of Bard et al. (1990, 1993). The result…

The Temporal Distribution of Radiocarbon Dates for the Iron Age in Southern Africa
New Isotopic and Sedimentological Measurements of the Thabaseek Deposits (South Africa) and the Dating of the Taung Hominid
Earlier attempts to date the Taung hominid type specimen of Australopithecus africanus Dart yielded conflicting results. Recent faunal studies pointed to an age of 2.3 myr. Radioisotopic results suggested 1.0 myr. New uranium studies reveal that the Thabaseek (the oldest Taung tufa) was not a closed system and that younger uranium entered the tufa after initial deposition, producing an apparent isotopic age younger than the age of deposition. The…
Direct Dating and Identity of Fibre Temper in Pre-Contact Bushman (Basarwa) Pottery
Late Quaternary Paleotemperatures Derived from a Speleothem from Cango Caves, Cape Province, South Africa
An oxygen isotope temperature record over a large part of the past 30,000 yr has been obtained for the southern Cape Province of South Africa by combining data on the isotopic composition of a stalagmite from a deep cave with that of a confined groundwater aquifer in the same region. Results show that temperatures during the last glacial maximum were on average about 6°C lower than those today, with peaks up to 7°C lower. A detailed analysis of t…
Patterns in the Age and Context of Rock Art in the Northern Cape
Climatic influence on the isotopic composition of bone nitrogen
Years of Tropospheric 14 C Observations in Central Europe
A long-term mountain station series of tropospheric 14 C data for the period 1959 to 1984 is presented. This series is considered representative of the higher altitude 14 C level over central Europe. Even tree-ring 14 C levels from a rural ground level site in southern Germany are consistently lower (by Δ 14 C depression = −15‰ if compared with the mountain station summer average in atmospheric CO 2 ). The rural tree-ring series is considered to …
Aspartic Acid Racemization and Radiocarbon Dating of an Early Milling Stone Horizon Burial in California
Concordant radiocarbon and aspartic acid racemization dates have been obtained for several Holocene aboriginal skeletons from coastal southern California sites. These results further demonstrate the reliability of racemization dating. One of the skeletons (SDM 16709), dated at 8,300 years, was a burial around which several milling stones had been placed. This well-dated burial indicates that the Southern California Milling Stone horizon is signif…
