The structure of inequalities and protracted social conflict
This theoretical essay draws upom economic, sociological and political ideas in order to link structural inequality to “protracted social conflict.” The meaning, determinants, and consequences of structural inequalities are specified. The linkages between protracted social conflict and economic and political structures of a society are outlined. “Development,” is hypothesized as alleviating or intensifying protracted social conflict. Contradictions and skepticism
This study reports the results of a survey conducted in January, 1980, at Cairo University where 131 seniors in political science expressed some salient attitudes towards the peace process. Israel was perceived by about one‐fourth of the sample as an enemy who is not taking serious positive steps to resolve the Arab‐Israeli conflict, especially the issue of Palestinian autonomy. The use of semantic dimensions in the scaling of international events
The following study is one consequence of an on‐going attempt by the authors to achieve a more comprehensive understanding and expression of data relating to international events. This paper reports on the collection of semantic differential scores for 250 different types of nation‐state behaviors and then demonstrates how those ratings were used to reconstruct the domestic and international scales in COPDAB so that the scale point categories wer…

A list of 641 major conflict events was used to generate a list of 265 major conflicts. Using conflict‐years as a measure of conflict, most of our findings were generally consistent with those of other authors, such as major conflicts were increasing from 1945 to 1970, as were external interventions, and most major conflicts were happening in the Third World.
