Visual and auditory perception in narrative discourse
This study presents a corpus-based investigation comparing the expression of auditory and visual perception in traditional storytelling in five languages: Chuvash, Nganasan, Selkup, Udihe, and Wan. We include languages with different types of evidential markers, as well as languages with no grammatical expression of evidentiality, and we also consider cases where perception is implicit in the narrative context. We examine whether the use of gramm…
Oriental Text and the Subtext of Russian Paroemiology
The article examines the geocultural image of the East, which has developed in Russian linguaculture. The purpose of the work is to systematize the conceptual and substantive characteristics of the Eastern world displayed by proverbs, to identify the axiological load of the Eastern-marked paroemias. The involvement in the study of the material of canonical proverbs, which accumulate centuries-old folk experience and fix the priorities of everyday…

The Lexicon of Youth Subcultures in Dynamics (Exemplified by Internet Forums)
The article examines the dynamic processes in the sphere of subcultural language nomination and their socio-cultural conditionality. The research is carried out on the material that has not been previously considered in the dynamic aspect (slang of football fans, hip-hop culture, and k-pop representatives), new words of student slang are involved, the dynamics of which is currently studied unsystematically. The replenishment of the lexicon of the…
The Axiological Portrait of Quality and its Standard (Based on Comparative Phraseography)
The paper presents the concept of a comparative topical dictionary of set similes, which allows to fully reflect the axiological parameters of phraseological material. The choice of the object of vocabulary description which is set similes (comparative phraseological units) is justified by their direct correlation with the category of evaluation and the individual value system. It is emphasized that in the act of phraseological nomination, axiolo…
Reference frames in language and cognition
Numerous studies have found evidence of a speech community’s referential practices in discourse being predictive of its members’ behavior in nonverbal tasks. In this article, we discuss a series of exceptions to this alignment pattern, drawing on data from eleven populations of Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North and Central America, and Oceania. These exceptions have not been discussed in conjunction with one another and the striking commonalit…
Building semantic maps for closely related languages
This study is an exercise in micro-scale comparison based on the semantic map approach. A semantic map is constructed for meanings associated with the word for ‘grain’ in four closely related South Mande languages: Dan Blowo, Tura, Mwan, and Wan. Although non-cognate, the words show remarkable similarity in their range of meanings, suggesting that newly introduced words are associated with the same networks of meanings as the words they come to r…
Rhymed Talk and Ideophones
This article presents a case for approaching works of nineteenth-century realist fiction as proto-ethnographic documents that contain unique evidence for reconstructing extinct discourse practices. We focus on two previously undescribed phenomena: improvised rhyming in sparring dialogue, and the use of ideophones in oral storytelling
Noun class agreement in Kafire (Senufo)
A major challenge presented by noun class systems of Senufo languages is the non-trivial interaction between the agreement features of the noun phrase and the noun class specification on the head noun. In Kafire (Senufo, Côte d’Ivoire), demonstratives normally agree with the head noun independent of whether or not the head noun is modified by adjectives. Some adjectives, however, are exceptions to the general rule: in their presence the demonstra…

East Slavic Parallels and Singularities in the Trilingual Axiological Dictionary of Proverbs
The article presents an innovative concept of a comparative dictionary that allows to reflect the objective analysis of the similar and different aspects in axiologically oriented paremiological systems of the East Slavic languages. Comprehensive collected dictionaries that include tens of thousands of Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian proverbs, found in handwritten and printed collections of the last four centuries, have been used for this resea…
Logophoric speech is not indirect
The distinction between direct and indirect speech has long been known not to reflect the crosslinguistic diversity of speech reporting strategies. Yet prominent typological approaches remain firmly grounded in that traditional distinction and look to place language-specific strategies on a universalcontinuum, treating them as deviations from the "direct" and "indirect"ideals. We argue that despite their methodological attractiveness, continuum a…
Reported speech in Kakabe
Mainstream approaches to the typology of reported discourse have been based on the notion of a direct-indirect continuum : reported speech constructions are traditionally analyzed as conforming to or deviating from the “ideals” of European direct and indirect speech. This study argues that continuum-based approaches fail to distinguish between two dimensions of variation that are systematically discriminated in a number of African languages and s…
Moscow as a National Symbol
This article studies the possibilities of reconstructing the symbolic image of Moscow, referring to traditional Russian proverbs and their modern transformations. Proverbs are examined from the point of view of the linguo-cultural aspect, taking into account their cultural and historical symbolic semantics and modern socio-cultural background. The research aims to identify the symbolic meanings of the image of Moscow and represent the techniques …
Logophoricity and shifts of perspective
This study presents a typology of existing approaches to logophoricity and discusses problems the different approaches face. It addresses, in particular, perspective-based accounts describing constructions with logophoric pronouns in terms of their intermediate position on the direct-indirect continuum ( Evans 2013 ), and lexical accounts incorporating the idea of coreference with the reported speaker into the pronoun’s meaning, either through ro…

Diminutives derived from terms for children
The study addresses the relationship between diachronic change and synchronic polysemy based on the use of diminutives in four closely related Southeastern Mande languages. It explores the synchronic patterns of use of cognate diminutive markers deriving from the word ‘child’, and accounts for differences between the languages in terms of a Radial Category network, which is designed to capture in one representation both mechanisms of diachronic c…
A Population Study of the Quality of Life of the Habitancy of the Chukotka Autonomous Area
The aim was to study the indicators of quality of life of the adult population of the Chukotka Autonomous Region (ChAO) and to identify characteristics specific to the remote arctic area. Methods: The study included 424 residents of the Chukotka Autonomous Region aged 18 to 77 years old (231 - women and 193 - men). Using the RAND SF-36 questionnaire, health-related quality of life indicators were evaluated. Results: The average indicators of the …
Frames of reference in discourse
In spite of the growing body of research on frames of spatial reference, a number of important questions remain unanswered. This study explores reference frame use in Bashkir, based on a linguistic matching task and a nonverbal task. In the linguistic task, speakers relied freely on intrinsic and relative frames. In intrinsic descriptions, two different kinds of mapping were attested: a mapping based on the Ground’s function, and a mapping based …
When Linguists and Speakers Do Not Agree
Across Africa, linguistic techniques that are closely associated with traditional genres are vulnerable to changes in traditional habits, and often become extinct long before the language is recognized as endangered. Their loss accounts for the discrepancy between professional linguist's assessment and the speakers' perception of the vitality of the language. The study discusses an array of endangered storytelling strategies accumulated by Wan (M…

Redefining Constructio Praegnans
In traditional Ancient Greek grammar, the term constructio praegnans refers to an apparent syntactic anomaly whereby the idea of motion is missing from either the verb or the prepositional phrase: a verb that does not express motion is combined with a directional prepositional phrase (e.g., ‘slaughter into a container’) or a motion verb combines with a static prepositional phrase describing a goal of motion (e.g., ‘throw in the fire’). This study…
The Many Ways to Find the “Right” and the “Left”
Since early work by Talmy (1975, 1985), linguistic representation of space has been at the center of research in lexical typology, cognitive linguistics, and psycholinguistics (see, inter alia, the various approaches represented in Slobin (2000), Levinson (2003), Beavers et al. (2010)). Some of the central aspects of spatial representation, however, have remained largely understudied. Particularly poorly understood is the distinction between dyna…

Categorial reanalysis and the origin of the S-O-V-X word order in Mande
Mande languages are characterized by a typologically unusual rigid S-O-V-X word order pattern, and do not fit neatly into the traditional category of "verb-final" languages. While subjects and objects precede the verb, all oblique arguments and adjuncts follow it. Several diachronic hypotheses have been advanced to account for the word order type of Mande (Givón, Serial verbs and syntactic change: Niger-Congo, University of Texas Press, 1975, Hei…
Subcategorization pattern and lexical meaning of motion verbs
The article addresses the problem of the linguistic encoding of the locative roles of Goal and Source of motion. After discussing the typological patterns of marking static locations, goals, and sources of motion, I analyze data from Wan, a Southeastern Mande language that often does not encode the distinction between sources and goals either outside of the verb (by adpositions or case) or in the verb's argument structure. In addition to a class …

Logophoric Discourse and First Person Reporting in Wan (West Africa)
The distinction between direct and indirect reporting is commonly assumed to be a universal underlying principle of discourse representation. This article surveys a system of reporting that is based on an alternative principle. It argues that the choice of a reporting strategy in Wan (Mande, Côte d'Ivoire) depends not on the information properties of the report (form vs. content, de re vs. de dicto ), but rather on discourse properties of the par…
One vs. more than one
When children first mark distinctions in language, they may use semantically possible but nonconventional expressions. This can be seen in their initial attempts to express 'more-than-one' in English (conventionally conveyed by use of the plural inflection). We explore children's earliest expressions for 'more-than-one' by (a) examining longitudinal records for references to one vs. several objects, (b) eliciting references to pictures depicting …

The syntax of postpositional phrases in Wan, an “Sovx” language
In the study of word order typology, the SOVX word order pattern of Mande is often viewed as exceptional and explained diachronically as a “type in transition”. This paper argues against that view based on analysis of the sentence structure of Wan (Southeastern Mande). I show that the SOVX word order of Wan is a consequence of an unusual syntactic behavior of postpositional arguments, which do not form a syntactic constituent with their verb but …
