This article explores the rhetorical function of al-Andalus (medieval Spain) in modern Syrian popular culture, with a focus on music. The rhetoric of al-Andalus in Syria is intimately related to the project of nation building. Metonyms of modernity in contemporary Syrian music and painting
This essay examines painting and music in modern Syria as cultural practices that give voice to modernist sensibilities. I argue that two important spatial and temporal tropes structure the aesthetics of authenticity in Syrian visual and musical arts: the old city and the countryside. Through recourse to these metonymic representations and evocations, Syrian artists articulate a vision of modernity in which discourses of emotion and sentiment are…
The Aesthetics of Spiritual Practice and the Creation of Moral and Musical Subjectivities in Aleppo, Syria
This essay analyzes the performance of dhikr (the invocation of God through prayer, song, and movement) in Aleppo, Syria, as an embodied practice mediated by specific repertoires of aesthetic and kinesthetic practices. In dhikr, aesthetic stimuli produce an experience of temporal transformation that participants narrate as ecstasy. Performing dhikr also conditions a musical self, which in turn allows for the habituation of spiritual states. This …

Al-Muwashshahât and al-Qudûd al-Halabiyya
This article analyzes two important genres of Arab music that are heard in Syria in the course of the performance of the wasla , or suite of songs: the muwashshahât and the popular songs known as al-qudûd al-halabiyya .
