Th-century copies of a 15th-century early Netherlandish painting uncovered through technical and art-historical research
Studies of Early Netherlandish panel paintings have long implemented techniques such as dendrochronology, pigment analysis and infrared reflectography. However, knowledge about the production of workshop replicas from fifteenth century paintings, and later copies, remains limited. As a result, the attribution of such paintings poses a challenge to art historians. Here, we present a multidisciplinary investigation into two copies of an Early Nethe…
Scientific Conference Report The 11th Worlddendro Conference–Beyond Boundaries
The 11th WorldDendro Conference was convened from 28 July to 1 August 2025 at Avani Victoria Falls Resort, Livingstone, Zambia. Organized by the Tree-Ring Society and hosted by the Copperbelt University, this historic edition marked the first WorldDendro meeting held on the African continent. The hybrid conference attracted more than 100 participants from 37 countries representing academia, government, industry, and civil society. Scientific sess…
A replication study in dendrochronology—revisiting the panels of two portraits of Rembrandt
In the Replicating a Rembrandt Study project, which revisited the attribution of two portraits of Rembrandt while exploring the strengths and limitations of replication studies in art history, dendrochronological research was carried out to reproduce and replicate research conducted in the 1990s. One of the portraits, at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg, Germany, had then been attributed to Rembrandt, whereas the other one, at the col…
Half models from the Dutch Navy
This study investigates the function of bracket models within the maritime collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. These half models, depicting the frames and ribbands of ship hulls, were transferred from the Navy Model Room in the 1880s. While bracket models are believed to have played a role in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Dutch shipbuilding, their exact purpose remains uncertain. To elucidate their function, the authors examined the to…

Dendrochronological Dating of Northern Netherlandish Furniture from the Late-17th and Early-18th Centuries
Over the last 30 years, more than 70 pieces of furniture from the Rijksmuseum collection (Amsterdam, the Netherlands) have been dated using dendrochronology. Furniture from the northern Netherlands was seldom dated by the maker and never signed, and only a few documents indicating who and when it was made have survived. Here, we present an overview of the research carried out on 17th-century furniture objects from the Rijksmuseum, with a special …
A stepwise multidisciplinary approach to determine the date and provenance of historical wooden objects
We present a stepwise multidisciplinary approach combining woodworking expertise, dendrochronology, DNA genotyping and radiocarbon dating to determine when, where and how historical wooden objects were made. The effective implementation of this approach is demonstrated with a set of wooden stocks from the Rijksmuseum collections in Amsterdam (the Netherlands). In 2019, preceding an exhibition about slavery, stocks made of oak (Quercus sp.) were d…
Unraveling a 17th-Century North Netherlandish Panel Maker
The marking and branding of oak panel painting supports is a well-known practice in art-production centers of the Southern Netherlands, such as Antwerp in the 16th and 17th centuries. Conversely, information about the activities and regulations of 17th-century panel makers in the Northern Netherlands is scant and has hitherto never been thoroughly researched. Here, we present our research on a panel maker who sold his products to painters within …
Dating and provenancing the Woman with lantern sculpture – A contribution towards attribution of Netherlandish art
Studying the wood of art objects such as sculptures, panel paintings and furniture can be crucial to elucidate their chronology and production centre. Here we present an approach that considers the provenance of the wood and its potential availability in different areas as a means to identify the provenance of wooden art objects. We illustrate this approach with an interdisciplinary study aimed to determine the date and provenance of the Woman wi…
Tree-ring chronologies, stable strontium isotopes and biochemical compounds
Studies on the provenance of wood for shipbuilding contribute widely to the fields of archaeology, anthropology, environmental history, cultural geography, and palaeoclimatology. The development of reference datasets to determine the date and provenance of shipwreck timbers is therefore a paramount undertaking. Here we compile and present recent advances in the development of tree-ring chronologies, stable strontium isotope ratios and chemical bi…
Selecting and Sampling Shipwreck Timbers for Dendrochronological Research
In this article, we provide practical and straightforward guidance for the selection and sampling of shipwreck timbers for dendrochronological research. We outline sampling strategies and present informative figures that illustrate how to proceed in a variety of scenarios that archaeologists regularly encounter. However, in order to fully exploit the potential of tree-ring research on these objects, we would urge archaeologists to involve dendroc…

Dendrochronological Dating and Provenancing of Timbers from the Arade 1 Shipwreck, Portugal
As part of a larger project promoting the development of historical dendrochronology in the Iberian Peninsula, ship-timbers from the Arade 1 wreck (mostly planking and framing elements), stored at the DANS/IGESPAR in Lisbon, were examined. Of these, 52 samples were identified as deciduous oak (Quercus subg. quercus) and two as chestnut (Castanea sativa). Of 24 timbers selected for dendrochronological research, 23 could be dated, placing the origi…
