Tracing the influence of Western Mediterranean innovations in Neolithic Europe through directly radiocarbon-dated naked wheat (Triticum aestivum/durum/turgidum)
The dispersal of crops offers a powerful lens through which to investigate prehistoric mobility, interaction, and adaptation. This study examines the spatiotemporal distribution of naked wheat across Europe during the Neolithic using a dataset of 116 directly dated naked wheat remains from 58 archaeological sites (ca. 6000–2400 cal BCE). Dates were calibrated and analysed through summed probability distributions, composite Kernel Density Estimati…
Manured or not manured? New baselines for re-interpreting cereal C and N stable isotope data from Neolithic sites in the NW Mediterranean
An archaeobotanical and stable isotope approach to changing agricultural practices in the NW Mediterranean region around 4000 BC
It has recently been observed, that a change in the crop spectrum happened during the so-called Middle Neolithic in France at ca. 4000 BC. An agricultural system based on free-threshing cereals (naked wheat and naked barley) seems to shift to one based on glume wheats. This is a major change for traditional farmers and this paper aims to shed light on its possible causes. Here we describe the results of new investigations in a key area for the un…
Neolithic occupations (c. 5200-3400 cal BC) at Isolino Virginia (Lake Varese, Italy) and the onset of the pile-dwelling phenomenon around the Alps
Neolithic pile dwelling sites are known particularly well North of the Alps, with a boom starting from ca. 4300 cal BC. These sites are famous for the excellent preservation conditions of organic material (wooden tools, textiles, fruit remains and foodstuffs have been preserved in many of them), but their origin is still unclear. In Europe, only three reliably-dated settlements of this type are documented in the Early Neolithic: La Marmotta ca. 5…
Absolute Chronology at the Waterlogged Site of La Draga (Lake Banyoles, Ne Iberia)
Sixty-two 14 C dates are analyzed in combination with a recently established local floating tree-ring sequence for the Early Neolithic site of La Draga (Banyoles, northeast Iberian Peninsula). Archaeological data, radiometric and dendrochronological dates, as well as sedimentary and micro-stratigraphical information are used to build a Bayesian chronological model, using the ChronoModel 2.0 and OxCal 4.4 computer programs, and IntCal 2020 calibra…
Radiocarbon Dates Associated to Neolithic Contexts (Ca. 5900 – 2000 Cal BC) from the Northwestern Mediterranean Arch to the High Rhine Area
This paper presents a compilation of radiocarbon dates associated with the process of arrival, development and consolidation of the first farming communities that settled between the north-western Mediterranean Arch and the High Rhine area approximately between 5900 and 2000 cal BC covering a large geographical area previously out of the main focus of 14 C data compilations. The database includes dates from scientific publications and it incorpor…
Global Processes, Regional Dynamics
The goal of this paper is to discuss the validity of radiocarbon dates as a source of knowledge for explaining social dynamics over a large region and a long period of time. We have carefully selected c. 1000 14C dates for the time interval 8000–4000 cal BC within the northwestern Mediterranean area (NE Iberian Peninsula, SE France, N Italy) and Switzerland. Using statistical analysis, we have modelled the summed probability distribution of those…
Advancing the Analysis of Past Human/Plant Relationships
The ‘pollen washes’ technique, based on the analysis of the pollen embedded in the porous surface of archaeological artefacts, is developed for investigating past plant usage and consumption and to characterize the functionality of artefacts related to plant processing, gathering and storage. The research presented results in relevant methodological improvements of this technique, which has never previously been applied on materials from European…
