Mathematical modelling of urban sprawl
CHETNA-Traffic
India, a rapidly developing economy with the world’s largest population, has set an ambitious target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. Road transport, contributing to 12% of India’s energy-related CO2 emissions, plays a significant role in exacerbating urban air pollution. Given the country’s swift urbanization and the expansion of road transport to meet mobility demands, CO2 emissions from this sector could potentially double by 20…

Surfacic networks
Surfacic networks are structures built upon a 2D manifold. Many systems, including transportation networks and various urban networks, fall into this category. The fluctuations of node elevations imply significant deviations from typical plane networks and require specific tools to understand their impact. Here, we present such tools, including lazy paths that minimize elevation differences, graph arduousness which measures the tiring nature of s…
Modeling the spatial dynamics of income in cities
Urban inequality is a major challenge for cities in the 21st century. This inequality is reflected in the spatial income structure of cities which evolves in time through various processes. Gentrification is a well-known illustration of these dynamics in which the population of a low-income area changes as wealthier residents arrive and old-settled residents are expelled. Less understood but very important is the reverse process of gentrification…

Large-Scale Tools
It is clear that the difficulty for spatial systems – including spatial networks – is to go beyond local measures and characterization. This is a very general problem which finds its root in the existence of spatial correlations between the elements of the system. Simple correlation measures can be helpful, but it is desirable to be able to have a global characterization of a spatial setting. In this chapter, we will present different approaches …
Growing Spatial Networks
From Complex to Spatial Networks
Betweenness Centrality
There are many centralities that characterize the importance of a node (or an edge) in a large network. Among all these centralities, the betweenness centrality (BC) captures important aspects of the network and its structure. The BC is able to point to nodes with great importance in these networks. This is particularly true for resilience for example where the removal of high BC nodes can lead to a macroscopic breakdown of the system

Simple Measures
Many studies on complex networks focus on how to characterize them and what are the most relevant measures for understanding their structure. In particular, the degree distribution and the existence of the second moment for an infinite network was shown to be critical when studying dynamical processes on networks. These behaviors are therefore strongly connected to degree fluctuations and to the existence of hubs. In the case of spatial networks,…

Classes of small-world networks
We study the statistical properties of a variety of diverse real-world networks. We present evidence of the occurrence of three classes of small-world networks: ( a ) scale-free networks, characterized by a vertex connectivity distribution that decays as a power law; ( b ) broad-scale networks, characterized by a connectivity distribution that has a power law regime followed by a sharp cutoff; and ( c ) single-scale networks, characterized by a c…

The architecture of complex weighted networks
Networked structures arise in a wide array of different contexts such as technological and transportation infrastructures, social phenomena, and biological systems. These highly interconnected systems have recently been the focus of a great deal of attention that has uncovered and characterized their topological complexity. Along with a complex topological structure, real networks display a large heterogeneity in the capacity and intensity of the…
Resolution limit in community detection
Detecting community structure is fundamental for uncovering the links between structure and function in complex networks and for practical applications in many disciplines such as biology and sociology. A popular method now widely used relies on the optimization of a quantity called modularity, which is a quality index for a partition of a network into communities. We find that modularity optimization may fail to identify modules smaller than a s…
Dynamical Processes on Complex Networks
The availability of large data sets has allowed researchers to uncover complex properties such as large-scale fluctuations and heterogeneities in many networks, leading to the breakdown of standard theoretical frameworks and models. Until recently these systems were considered as haphazard sets of points and connections. Recent advances have generated a vigorous research effort in understanding the effect of complex connectivity patterns on dynam…

Elementary processes governing the evolution of road networks
Urbanisation is a fundamental phenomenon whose quantitative characterisation is still inadequate. We report here the empirical analysis of a unique data set regarding almost 200 years of evolution of the road network in a large area located north of Milan (Italy). We find that urbanisation is characterised by the homogenisation of cell shapes, and by the stability throughout time of high-centrality roads which constitute the backbone of the urban…

Spatial Networks
Multilayer networks
In most natural and engineered systems, a set of entities interact with each other in complicated patterns that can encompass multiple types of relationships, change in time and include other types of complications. Such systems include multiple subsystems and layers of connectivity, and it is important to take such ‘multilayer’ features into account to try to improve our understanding of complex systems. Consequently, it is necessary to generali…
From mobile phone data to the spatial structure of cities
Pervasive infrastructures, such as cell phone networks, enable to capture large amounts of human behavioral data but also provide information about the structure of cities and their dynamical properties. In this article, we focus on these last aspects by studying phone data recorded during 55 days in 31 Spanish cities. We first define an urban dilatation index which measures how the average distance between individuals evolves during the day, all…
Scaling
In this commentary we discuss the validity of scaling laws and their relevance for understanding urban systems and helping policy makers. We show how the recent controversy about the scaling of CO2 transport-related emissions with population size, where different authors reach contradictory conclusions, is symptomatic of the lack of understanding of the underlying mechanisms. In particular, we highlight different sources of errors, ranging from i…
A global take on congestion in urban areas
We analyze the congestion data collected by a GPS device company (TomTom) for almost 300 urban areas in the world. Using simple scaling arguments and data fitting we show that congestion during peak hours in large cities grows essentially as the square root of the population density. This result, at odds with previous publications showing that gasoline consumption decreases with density, confirms that density is indeed an important determinant of…
From paths to blocks
The street network is an important aspect of cities and contains crucial information about their organization and evolution. Characterizing and comparing various street networks could then be helpful for a better understanding of the mechanisms governing the formation and evolution of these systems. Their characterization is however not easy: there are no simple tools to classify planar networks and most of the measures developed for complex netw…
Morphogenesis of Spatial Networks
A fundamental diagram of urbanization
The process of urbanization is one of the most important phenomenon of our societies and it is only recently that the availability of massive amounts of geolocalized historical data allows us to address quantitatively some of its features. Here, we discuss how the number of buildings evolves with population and we show on different datasets (Chicago, 1930–2010; London, 1900–2015; New York City, 1790–2013; Paris, 1861–2011) that this ‘fundamental …
