Patterns of alleged offending amongst Aboriginal and non‐Aboriginal young people in the Northern Territory of Australia, 1997–2019
In Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are much more likely to be arrested, charged with criminal offences and imprisoned than other Australians. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders comprise 49% of young people in detention but only 5.8% of the Australian population aged 10–17. This study investigated changes between 1997 and 2019 in the interaction of Aboriginal and non‐Aboriginal young people with the justice system in t…
Mental health-related hospitalisations associated with patterns of child protection and youth justice involvement during adolescence
The extent of violence inflicted on adolescent Aboriginal girls in the Northern Territory
The very high levels of violence suffered by Aboriginal women commence in the pre-teen years. Non-Aboriginal girls are 'protected' from the rising levels of violence that boys experience as they progress through adolescence, but Aboriginal girls are not afforded such protection
Spatial variation in cervical cancer screening participation and outcomes among Indigenous and non‐Indigenous Australians in Queensland
Indigenous women continue to experience a disproportionately higher burden of cervical cancer than non‐Indigenous women in Australia. The National Indigenous Cervical Screening Project used probabilistic record linkage to combine population‐based administrative databases and identify Indigenous women on Pap Smear Registers. This study aimed to quantify the spatial variation by local government areas (LGAs) for Indigenous and non‐Indigenous women …
Development of a National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cancer Framework
Indigenous Australians experience a substantially higher cancer mortality rate than non-Indigenous Australians. While cancer outcomes are improving for non-Indigenous Australians, they are worsening for Indigenous Australians. Reducing this disparity requires evidence-based and culturally-appropriate guidance. The purpose of this paper is to describe an initiative by Cancer Australia and Menzies School of Health Research (Menzies) to develop Aust…
