  • The Passion for Music

Antoine Hennion, Margaret Rigaud et al.•BOOK•Passion for Music•2017•Citada por: 11

Music is an accumulation of mediators: instruments, languages, sheets, performers, scenes, media and so on. There is no musical objectin itself ; music must always be made again. In this innovative book, Hennion turns the elusiveness of music into a resource for a pragmatic analysis: by which collective process do we make music appear among us? Rather than offering a sociology of music, The Passion for Music listens to the lesson provided by the …

  • Germinal

Emile Zola, Robert Lethbridge et al.•BOOK•Germinal•2008

Zola's masterpiece of working life, Germinal (1885), exposes the inhuman conditions of miners in northern France in the 1860s. By Zola's death in 1902 it had come to symbolize the call for freedom from oppression so forcefully that the crowd which gathered at his State funeral chanted "Germinal! Germinal!" While it is a dramatic novel of working life and everyday relationships, Germinal is also a complex novel of ideas, given fresh vigor and powe…

  • Topographic relations

Open Access•Rob Inkpen, Peter Collier et al.•ARTICLE•Area•2007•Citada por: 6•Referências: 24

This paper considers whether the deployment of a topographical metaphor may add value to the recent discussion of networked relations. The paper discusses how viewing relations as part of a relational landscape may add a third dimension to the discussion by allowing an appreciation of the strength, or entrenchment, of relations, and how these entrenchments impact on the development of new relations and the resistance to watershed events. The heur…

  • Ireland's Rurban Horizon

    Open Access•Peter Collier•ARTICLE•Irish Journal of Sociology•2004

Estyn Evans (1973) described the principal heritage of the Irish countryside as pastoral. This way of life evolved alongside different agrarian populations and field systems. Its history is characterised by the abundance of people and the scarcity of land. This heritage still traces its characteristics on contemporary rural morphologies. The traveller sees new houses on almost every by-road. It seems that the Irish prefer to live in small fields …

    Peter Collier•ARTICLE•Cartography and Geographic…•2002•Citada por: 6•Referências: 19

At the beginning of the twentieth century, little of the world outside of Europe, India, and parts of North America had been covered by topographic mapping. By the end of the century there were few areas that were not covered by topographic mapping, if only at small scales. Most of the technological changes that made this extension of map coverage possible were pioneered during the period 1900-1939. This paper reviews the technological developmen…

  • The RGS, exploration and Empire and the contested nature of surveying

    Open Access•Peter Collier, Rob Inkpen•ARTICLE•Area•2002•Citada por: 3

In 1879, the RGS started courses in practical surveying based on the methods used by navigators. Subsequently, RGS courses, increasingly under the influence of former members of the Survey of India, changed in character. At the same time as the nature of appropriate surveying was being negotiated within the RGS, the debate over the academic nature of geography also took shape. The development of the ‘new’ geography reflected the conflicts within …

  • A Differentiated Model of Role Identity Acquisition

    Open Access•Peter Collier, Peter J Collier•ARTICLE•Symbolic Interaction•2001•Citada por: 3•Referências: 21

The differentiated model builds on Burke's control system model by emphasizing the importance of multidimensionality and how role usage variation affects identity formation. In a study of 146 entering university students, differentiating the college student role into multiple meaning dimensions results in significant variation in degree of role identification improvement. This model ties differences in role use in interaction to identity formatio…
