Treating epilepsy in Italy between XIX and XX century
Folk medicine used to heal malaria in Calabria (southern Italy)
In Italy, malaria was an endemic disease that was eradicated by the mid-20th century. This paper evaluates the prophylactic and therapeutic remedies used by folk medicine to cure malaria in Calabria (southern Italy). The data has been collected by analysing works of physicians, ethnographers, folklorists and specialists of the study of Calabrian history between the end of the 19th century and the 20th century. The data collected have allowed us to…
Ethnicity and Evolution of the Biodemographic Structure of Arbëreshe and Italian Populations of the Pollino Area, southern Italy (1820-1984)
In the present study, we show how, through time, an ethnic mosaic and a changing social and economic context translated into intrapopulation differentiation and a change in genetic barriers between populations. Surname analysis was applied to a sample drawn from two centuries of marriage records in ten Arbëreshe and nine Italian villages of southern Italy to evaluate the evolution of internal differentiation and changes in genetic relationships b…
Genetic Characterization of the Historical Albanian Ethnic Minority of Calabria (Southern Italy)
Three historical ethnic minorities are present in Calabria: Albanians, Greeks, and Occitans. The Albanian ethnic minority is the more populous, having settled in Calabria between the 15th and 17th centuries, and these populations are now located in the provinces of Cosenza and Catanzaro. In the present study the Albanian population structure is analyzed based on the allele frequencies of six classic genetic markers: ACP, GC, PGM1, AK, ADA, and 6P…
Color-blindness in Calabria (Southern Italy)
The frequency of color-blindness (CB) in 13,072 males from 409 towns in Calabria is 5.42%. Regional variation in CB within the three provinces of Calabria was studied: Cosenza (northern), Catanzaro (central), and Reggio Calabria (southern). There is a decreasing trend of mean frequencies of CB from Cosenza to Reggio Calabria through Catanzaro: 6.23%, 4.65%, and 3.43%, respectively. The mean frequencies do not take into account the two ethnic mino…
The cholera
Cholera, as it was regarding each infective disease of which nobody knew its aetiologic agent or, in any way, if its agent was present really, was for the Calabrian people an unknown enemy that nobody knew anything about either its behaviour or the modality of its penetration into the human body. During many years characterized by a medical methodological obscurantism, Calabrian people lived, during the different choleric epidemics, on a daily li…
Analysis of colour vision with the Ishihara test
In the present study, we have described and compared both the number and the types of the mistakes that were made during reading of the Ishihara plates by 3,926 students attending the secondary schools in the province of Cosenza (Calabria, Southern Italy) and by 546 Calabrian university students all without colour-blindness. There were no qualitative differences in the types of mistakes made by the two groups of subjects during their reading of t…
