Prevalence of self-reported asthma among female ice hockey players in the Swedish women's hockey league
Background Asthma is common among athletes, particularly in winter sports, and can affect both health and performance. Ice hockey players are exposed to cold, dry air and high-intensity exertion, all recognized as triggers for asthma symptoms. However, the prevalence of asthma among female ice hockey players remains largely unknown. Methods In this cross-sectional study, all 224 players in the 2023–2024 season of the Swedish Women's Hockey League…
Association between neighborhood deprivation and type 2 diabetes risk among ADHD patients
Objective: Both attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and neighborhood deprivation have been previously associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, the potential association between neighborhood deprivation and T2D in ADHD patients remains underexplored. Our aim was to study the potential effect of neighborhood deprivation on incident T2D in patients with ADHD. Methods: = 246,515) with ADHD who were followed in …
School performance gap between non-immigrant and second-generation immigrant children in Sweden—time trends and contributing factors
We aimed to investigate the school performance gap and its potential trend from 2010 to 2020 in non-immigrant and second-generation immigrant children in Sweden, whether parental mental disorders and low socioeconomic status contribute to this gap and its trends, and whether the effects of these factors differ by immigration status. We used multiple Swedish population registers, including 829,787 children born 1994–2004. We examined the school pe…
Immigrant-Native Wage Gap in Sweden
Sweden has an immigrant-native wage gap. Although the impact of educational attainment and other variables have been studied, the impact of specific personality traits analyzed separately on the wage gap remains poorly understood. In this study, we used a unique dataset that usually contains unobserved personality traits evaluated by psychologists during the Swedish military conscription, as well as post-conscription labor market data to examine …
School Grades and Neighbourhoods – A Natural Experiment
Adolescents with an immigrant background have poorer educational performance than their native counterparts, which may partly be explained by the quality of their neighbourhood area upon immigration to Sweden. An important part of neighbourhood quality is neighbourhood socioeconomic status (NSES). This study examines the impact of initial NSES on subsequent school grades in refugees by using a natural experiment that took place between 1985 and 1…
Parental mental disorders and school performance among non-immigrant and second-generation immigrant children in Sweden
Parental mental disorders affected the school performance of all children negatively. Future studies could examine what type of support at school for both second-generation immigrant children and non-immigrant children of parents with mental disorders are most beneficial
Total adiponectin in indigenous Melanesians on Kitava
OBJECTIVES: Experimental and small human studies have indicated that high total adiponectin levels have beneficial cardiometabolic effects. In contrast, however, high total adiponectin levels are also associated with higher all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in thoroughly adjusted epidemiological studies. To gain further insight into these seemingly contradictory results, we report results on total adiponectin from the indigenous Melanesian p…
Examining cultural background and the protective effect of marriage on alcohol use disorder in Sweden
Background Little is known about whether the protective effect of marriage on alcohol use disorder (AUD) varies by cultural background. Aims Using Swedish national data, we examined whether marriage is associated with a stronger reduction in AUD risk among Swedes of a Swedish background (i.e. those with two Swedish-born parents) compared to Swedes with a foreign background (i.e. one or two foreign-born parents) and whether the protective effect o…
Firearm-Related Homicide in Sweden
Sweden has witnessed a significant increase in the rate of firearm-related homicide. We therefore aimed to study the characteristics of individuals suspected of homicide, attempted homicide, preparation to commit homicide as well as conspiracy to commit homicide with a firearm in Sweden. By using information from different registers, suspected individuals between 2000 and 2017 and aged 15 to 60 were included in the study. A total of 889 individua…
Spatiotemporal patterns of drug use disorder in Sweden assessed using population-based registries
Persistent hotspots of DUD in Sweden were confirmed as well as new and emerging hotspots, especially in Stockholm, Göteborg and Malmö. Higher correlations existed in DUD rates across registers than across gender. The findings are useful for monitoring the current drug problem and for identifying drivers underlying patterns of spread and important causal pathways to DUD
Neighbourhood crime and major depression in Sweden
The apparent effect of increases in neighbourhood crime on the odds of MD seemed to differ between those of different immigrant statuses. Future research should aim to explore the possible mechanisms behind the differences in the rates of MD among the non-immigrant and immigrant populations in neighbourhoods with high crime
A Comparison between Indoor and Outdoor Rape Suspects in Sweden
As the number of rapes is increasing in Sweden, and the number of individuals convicted of these crimes is decreasing, it is of importance to study offender characteristics of those committing these crimes and the circumstances in which these crimes are conducted, such as indoors or outdoors. Data from Swedish population-based registers were used to identify individuals suspected of rape, aggravated rape, attempted rape or attempted aggravated ra…
Neighborhood Environmental Factors and Physical Activity Status among Rural Older Adults in Japan
(1) Background: Although several neighborhood environmental factors have been identified to be associated with older adults' physical activity, little research has been done in rural areas where the population is aging. This study aimed to investigate neighborhood environmental factors and the longitudinal change of physical activity status among rural older adults in Japan. (2) Methods: The study included 2211 older adults, aged over 60 years, r…
Car Driving Status and Living Arrangement Associated with Sarcopenia among Rural Japanese Older Adults
Ensuring mobility after driving cessation is an important public health issue to prevent functional limitations, but this issue is still not fully understood in rural settings. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that being a non-driver and living alone is associated with a greater risk of sarcopenia among the community-dwelling elderly in rural Japanese areas. This study was conducted in 2018 and data from 738 participants were used…
Assessing the Impact of a Hilly Environment on Depressive Symptoms among Community-Dwelling Older Adults in Japan
Although some neighborhood environmental factors have been found to affect depressive symptoms, few studies have focused on the impact of living in a hilly environment, i.e., land slope, on depressive symptoms among rural older adults. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate whether a land slope is associated with depressive symptoms among older adults living in rural areas. Data were collected from 935 participants, aged 65 years and old…
Conduct Disorder in Immigrant Children and Adolescents
The higher risk of conduct disorder among second-generation immigrants with a Swedish-born mother and the lower risk among most of the other immigrant groups warrants special attention and an investigation of potential underlying mechanisms
Is Neighbourhood Linking Social Capital Associated With Colorectal Cancer Incidence and Mortality? A National Cohort Study From Sweden
Swedish rape offenders — a latent class analysis
Sweden has witnessed an increase in the rates of sexual crimes including rape. Knowledge of who the offenders of these crimes are is therefore of importance for prevention. We aimed to study characteristics of individuals convicted of rape, aggravated rape, attempted rape or attempted aggravated rape (abbreviated rape+), against a woman ≥18 years of age, in Sweden. By using information from the Swedish Crime Register, offenders between 15 and 60 …
Deadly violence in Sweden
BACKGROUND: Sweden has in recent years witnessed increasing rates of firearm-related violence and homicide, which has contributed to increased rates of deadly violence. Attempts to profile offenders committing such crimes are of major importance, because such efforts may contribute to better preventive measures. We therefore aimed to study the characteristics of individuals convicted and/or suspected of homicide, attempted homicide, preparation t…
Analysis of spatial co-occurrence between cancer and cardiovascular disease mortality and its spatial variation among the Swedish elderly (2010–2015)
CVD and cancer are the two leading causes of death worldwide. Improvement in cancer early detection and treatment has resulted in an increased number of cancer survivors. However, many of the survivors tend to develop CVD often leading to their demise. Conversely, people with pre-existing CVD conditions, especially the elderly, have increased chances of developing cancer and dying from the same. The World Health Organization, consequently, recomm…
Neighborhood Deprivation and Risks of Autoimmune Disorders
Background: No study to date, as far as we know, has analyzed the potential effect of neighborhood-level deprivation on autoimmune disorders (ADs), when adjusted for individual-level characteristics. Methods: A total of 5.4 million individuals from 8363 neighborhoods, comprising the whole Swedish population (ages 25-74 years), were followed for the period 1 January 2000, until admission due to diagnosis of ADs during the period of the study, or t…
Socioeconomic factors, body mass index and bariatric surgery
Differences in bariatric surgery between socioeconomic groups were found, favoring those with a low socioeconomic status. However, very few socioeconomic differences were found amongst those who had a BMI > 40 kg/m 2 . This indicates that the Swedish healthcare system seems to have achieved equal access to health care for bariatric surgery
Chains of risk for alcohol use disorder
Causal nature of neighborhood deprivation on individual risk of coronary heart disease or ischemic stroke
Differences in declining mortality rates due to coronary heart disease by neighbourhood deprivation
BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the main cause of death in most industrialised countries, including those in Europe. The mortality rates due to coronary heart disease (CHD), one of the most serious CVD conditions, have been decreasing in most European countries during the last decades. However, whether the trends over time in CHD mortality rates differ depending on neighbourhood deprivation has rarely been investigated. METHODS: For e…
Neighborhood violent crime and unemployment increase the risk of coronary heart disease
Linking social capital and self-rated health
Neighbourhood deprivation and incidence of coronary heart disease
Study objective: To examine whether neighbourhood deprivation predicts incidence rates of coronary heart disease, beyond age and individual income. Design: Follow up study from 31 December 1995 to 31 December 1999. Women and men were analysed separately with respect to incidence rates of coronary heart disease. Multilevel logistic regression was used in the analysis with individual level characteristics (age, individual income) at the first level…

Low-linking social capital as a predictor of mental disorders
Neighborhood walkability, physical activity, and walking behavior
The influence of age at migration and length of residence on self-rated health among Swedish immigrants
Health care workers and policy makers need to be aware that immigrants who arrive in the host country at higher ages and/or have lived in the host country for a shorter period of time might need special attention as they are more likely to suffer from poor self-rated health, a valid health status indicator that can be used in population health monitoring
Social participation and coronary heart disease
Neighborhood walkability, deprivation and incidence of type 2 diabetes
Neighbourhood income and mental health
Incidence of Mental Disorders in Second-Generation Immigrants in Sweden
Many groups of second-generation immigrants have a higher risk of being hospitalised for mental disorder than the majority population. With increasing global migration it is crucial for all industrialised countries to take measures to improve mental health among second-generation immigrants
Neighborhood deprivation and inequities in coronary heart disease among patients with diabetes mellitus
Differences in declining mortality rates due to coronary heart disease by neighbourhood deprivation

Differences in neighborhood accessibility to health-related resources
Psychosocial working conditions and self-reported long-term illness
Refugees ran a higher risk of long-term illness than Swedes. Although there were no differences in risk between labour immigrants, refugees and Swedes under job strain, refugees with low work-related social support had a high risk of long-term illness. Unskilled/skilled refugee workers had lower decision latitudes than Swedes
Chains of risk for alcohol use disorder
Neighborhoods and mortality in Sweden
The association between neighborhood deprivation and mortality is well established, but knowledge about whether deprivation is best assessed regionally or nationally is scarce
Depression, neighborhood deprivation and risk of type 2 diabetes
Health-promoting and health-damaging neighbourhood resources and coronary heart disease
BACKGROUND: It has been hypothesised that the presence of health-damaging factors and lack of health-promoting factors lie in the causal pathway between neighbourhood deprivation and coronary heart disease (CHD). This study is the first to examine the associations between individual-level CHD risk and neighbourhood availability of fast-food restaurants, bars/pubs, physical activity facilities and healthcare resources. METHODS: Multilevel logistic…

Urbanisation and incidence of psychosis and depression
BACKGROUND: Previous studies of differences in mental health between urban and rural populations are inconsistent. AIMS: To examine whether a high level of urbanisation is associated with increased incidence rates of psychosis and depression, after adjustment for age, marital status, education and immigrant status. METHOD: Follow-up study of the total Swedish population aged 25-64 years with respect to first hospital admission for psychosis or de…
Neighborhood Socioeconomic Environment and Incidence of Coronary Heart Disease
In this study, the authors examined whether neighborhood socioeconomic environment predicted incident coronary heart disease after adjustment for individual-level characteristics. A random sample of the Swedish population (25,319 women and men aged 35-74 years) was interviewed between 1986 and 1993 and was followed through December 1997 for incident coronary heart disease (1,189 events). Neighborhood socioeconomic environment was defined by small…

Inequities in CHD Incidence and Case Fatality by Neighborhood Deprivation
Sickness absence poses a threat to the Swedish Welfare State
We confirmed that longstanding illness that results in self-reported reduced working capacity is an important variable related to length of SA, even after taking important confounders into consideration. We found a little less than half of those on sick leave reported no reduced working capacity due to longstanding illness, and some of these reported no other health problems. However, it is possible that some respondents had health problems not c…
Familial risks for nerve, nerve root and plexus disorders in siblings based on hospitalisations in Sweden
Background: Nerve, nerve root and plexus disorders are common diseases, but little is known about familial clustering in these diseases. This is, to our knowledge, the first systematic family study carried out on these diseases. Methods: Familial risks for siblings who were hospitalised for nerve, nerve root and plexus disorders in Sweden were defined. A nationwide database for neurological diseases was constructed by linking the Multigeneration …
Low-linking social capital as a predictor of mental disorders
Socio-economic status and overall and cause-specific mortality in Sweden
Even in Sweden, a country where health care is universally provided, higher socio-economic status is associated with decreased overall and cause-specific mortalities. Comparison of mortality among female and male socio-economic groups may provide valuable insights into the underlying causes of socio-economic inequalities in length of life
Physical activity, exercise and self-rated health
Both exercise and total physical activity were independently associated with good self-rated health. It seems to be advantageous to use more than one question in population based surveys in order to evaluate several dimensions of physical activity and identify the most inactive individuals
Arranging Appropriate Activities
The influence of age at migration and length of residence on self-rated health among Swedish immigrants

Familial risks for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease among siblings based on hospitalisations in Sweden
BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive disabling condition, for which tobacco smoking, environmental pollution, inherited alpha-antitrypsin deficiency and their interactions are predisposing factors. We carried out a family study on COPD in order to address the role of heritable and environmental risk factors at a population level. METHODS: In a nationwide study on familial risks for COPD the Multigeneration Reg…
Risk of obesity in immigrants compared with Swedes in two deprived neighbourhoods
This study demonstrates the magnitude of the obesity problem and the need for prevention programmes targeting native and immigrant adults in deprived neighbourhoods in Sweden. The initiatives should also focus on particular groups, e.g. immigrant women and those experiencing economic difficulties. Further studies are needed on behavioural and environmental factors influencing the risk of obesity in residents settled in deprived neighbourhoods
Levelling off of prevalence of obesity in the adult population of Sweden between 2000/01 and 2004/05
Although the mean BMI and obesity were almost unchanged in the Swedish adult population between 2000/01 and 2004/05, obesity levels in Sweden remained unacceptably high, especially in certain subgroups. Primary and secondary intervention actions should strive to decrease the prevalence of obesity in Sweden
Differences in neighborhood accessibility to health-related resources
High prevalence of type 2 diabetes in Iraqi and Swedish residents in a deprived Swedish neighbourhood - a population based study
Immigrants from the Middle-East are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D). The aim of the present survey was to measure, in a single deprived neighbourhood, the prevalence rates of impaired fasting glucose (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and T2D in residents originating from Iraq and to compare them to those in residents born in Sweden. An additional aim was to identify metabolic, lifestyle and socioeconomic risk factors associ…
Dietary differences between elderly Iranians living in Sweden and Iran a cross-sectional comparative study
There are general differences in dietary habits between Iranians living in Iran and Iranians living in Sweden. Parts of observed differences in dietary habits may reflect a favourable adoption process to the Swedish dietary habits after migration. Meanwhile other differences are point of concern in light of the high prevalence of overweight, among Iranians living in Sweden and can have unfavourable impact in particular in the context of cardiovas…
