Testing Non-Conventional Archaeomagnetic Materials
Teotihuacan, the largest urban center of ancient Mesoamerica, remains one of the most intensively studied archaeological sites in Mexico, yet its internal chronology continues to be debated. Among its most distinctive cultural features are omnipresent mural paintings, executed on lime plaster (stucco) surfaces that served as their structural support. In this study, we analyze for the first time mural pigments and stuccos together as a single arch…
Fire Along the Street of the Dead
Teotihuacan, one of the most significant urban and ceremonial centers of ancient Mesoamerica, was abruptly abandoned in the mid-1st millennium AD. The cause and timing of its collapse—commonly placed between 600 and 650 AD—remain major questions in Mesoamerican archaeology. In this study, we present a new archaeomagnetic investigation of six burned structures distributed along the Street of the Dead, including sites at the Square of the Moon, the…
Archaeomagnetic Insights into Pre-Hispanic Mayan Lime Production
The Yucatán Peninsula, a key region of the ancient Maya civilization, has long presented challenges in establishing absolute chronological frameworks for its cultural practices. While the central regions of Mesoamerica have been extensively studied, the southern areas, including the Yucatán, remain underexplored. Limekilns, integral to lime production in pre-Hispanic Maya society, are well suited for archaeomagnetic studies due to the high temper…

Estimation of Ecological and Human Health Risks Posed by Heavy Metals in Street Dust of Madrid City (Spain)
In this work, sampling was carried out in the urban area of Madrid to analyze the content of total heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, Ni, and Cd) in the street dust. Contamination was evaluated using various indices, such as the Contamination Factor (CF), Enrichment Factor (EF), Geo-accumulation Index (Igeo), Potential Ecological Risk Index (RI), Pollution Load Index (PLI), the Human Health Index Hazard Index (HI), and Cancer Risk (CR). Pollution indi…
This article offers an edition and a study of an unpublished (and hitherto unknown) text that deals with the preaching of the observant Franciscans in late medieval Castile. It was presented during the Inquisition against the heresy that took place in Toledo in 1461–1462, and its main purpose was to give arguments about the prohibition against preaching directed to the Franciscans. The work proposes a synthesis of the arguments against the margin…

Ch'ol nomenclature for soil classification in the ejido Oxolotán, Tacotalpa, Tabasco, México
BACKGROUND: The traditional ecological knowledge of land of the Ch'ol originary people from southeast Mexico forms part of their cultural identity; it is local and holistic and implies an integrated physical and spiritual worldview that contributes to improve their living conditions. We analyzed the nomenclature for soil classification used in the Mexican state of Tabasco by the Ch'ol farmers with the objective of contributing to the knowledge of…
Digital soil map of Quintana Roo, Mexico
A digital soil map of Quintana Roo was compiled at a 50 m pixel resolution using a geomorphopedological approach to produce a map that reflects a synoptic view of the geomorphology, environmental conditions and associated soils. Initially, it was developed using a geopedological approach and then converted to a digital map. The map was derived from soil-forming factors using mathematical methods to infer information in places where data were not …
Memoria y modelo
This article examines the composition of the Historia Roderici and seeks to address the contexts of its production and the resulting implications. Given the general historical accuracy of the text, underscored and presented here in significant detail, this study proposes dating the text with certain proximity to the events it narrates. Furthermore, its relationship with the cultural milieu of Alfonso I of Aragon (r. 1104–34) and some of the initi…
Construction of an Yucatec Maya soil classification and comparison with the WRB framework
Background Mayas living in southeast Mexico have used soils for millennia and provide thus a good example for understanding soil-culture relationships and for exploring the ways indigenous people name and classify the soils of their territory. This paper shows an attempt to organize the Maya soil knowledge into a soil classification scheme and compares the latter with the World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB). Methods Several participativ…
This article examines the relationship between the Carolingian legends found in the Gran conquista de Ultramar and the Crónica fragmentaria, a complex problem of literary history that, with few execptions, has been ignored by critics. It deals with two works from different periods that have strong textual similarities. Because they are unrelated, this raises the question of how we should account for their similarities. The analysis of the oldest …
