Covid-19's effects upon the religious group resources, psychosocial resources, and mental health of Orthodox Jews
In this article, we examine how COVID-19 has affected the mental health of Orthodox Jews and how religious resources cushion the effects of isolation and deprivation of religious gatherings over time. Using longitudinal data from the COVID-19 Community Portrait Study, fixed-effects regression models are employed to predict how religious resources are affected by COVID-19 and how mental health is affected by both COVID-19 and religious resources. …

Whence Orthodox Jewish Feminism? Cognitive Dissonance and Religious Change in the United States
A large literature on feminist theology and philosophy of religion has explored the various ways in which feminism has reshaped religious thought and practice within different faith traditions. This study uses Festinger's (1965) cognitive dissonance theory and the 2017 Nishma Research Survey of American Modern Orthodox Jews to examine the effect of tension between feminism and Orthodox Judaism on lay men and women. For 14% of Modern Orthodox Jews…

Does Taglit-Birthright Israel Foster Long-Distance Nationalism
Taglit-Birthright Israel has brought hundreds of thousands of diaspora Jewish young adults on tours of Israel. Drawing on data from a large-scale program evaluation, we ask how the program affects participants' feelings of homeland attachment and political views on contentious homeland issues. North Americans who traveled to Israel with Taglit between 2010 and 2012 were surveyed together with a comparison group of applicants to the program who di…
