The dark triad, emotional regulation, and celebrity admiration
This study examined personality and emotional factors associated with celebrity admiration. Building on past research linking specific personality traits to an inability to effectively regulate emotional states, we specifically examined the role of the Dark Triad (psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism) in predicting emotional dysregulation and problematic celebrity attachment in a cross-sectional analysis of 245 participants. We predicted…
Effect of Exercise and Sham Exercise Trackers on Perceived Workout Intensity and Mood in College Students
Exercise is an essential contributor to both physical and mental health and is a significant part of a person’s overall lifestyle. With the increasing popularity of exercise trackers, researchers were interested in the effects of sham exercise trackers on perceptions of workouts and affect. Researchers predicted participants wearing a sham Fitbit band would report greater perceptions of workout intensity, challenge, and satisfaction compared to t…
Good times and endless love: Billboard R&B/Hip Hop songs of the year across social and economic conditions
Gone country: An investigation of Billboard country songs of the year across social and economic conditions in the United States
Researchers have found that within the unfolding trends in pop culture, both pop music and the artists who perform pop songs vary predictably according to socioeconomic conditions. Popular songs are longer, slower, more lyrically meaningful, and in more somber sounding keys during difficult social and economic times. Furthermore, male and more mature-looking pop music performers are more successful during difficult economic times. In the current …
Relationships between Facebook Intensity, Friendship Contingent Self-Esteem, and Personality in U.S. College Students
U.S. college students (N = 200) completed measures of Facebook use, friendship contingent self-esteem, personality, and narcissism. Those who strongly connected their self-esteem with their quality of friendship relationships were predicted to be more active Facebook users. As predicted, a significant positive relationship between Facebook intensity and friendship contingent self-esteem was found. No significant relationships between Facebook use…
The Language of Lyrics: An Analysis of Popular Billboard Songs Across Conditions of Social and Economic Threat
The lyrical content of Billboard No. 1 songs for each year from 1955 to 2003 was investigated across changes in U.S. social and economic conditions. Consistent with the environmental security hypothesis, popular song lyrics were predicted to have more meaningful themes and content when social and economic conditions were threatening. Trends for more meaningful, comforting, and romantic lyric ratings were observed in more threatening social and ec…
Developmental Stability of Perceived Physical Attractiveness From Infancy to Young Adulthood
We predicted that physical attractiveness ratings of individuals at birth, 6, 12, and 18 years of age would be relatively stable and females would rate babies as more attractive than would males, due to their socialization to care for infants (Berman, 1980)
Triggers of Most Embarrassing Moment Recollections in a College Sample
Sabini, Siepmann, Stein, and Meyerowitz (2000) identified three types of situations which trigger embarrassment and created a subscale of each subtype of trigger. The three subtypes include faux pas (making a social mistake), center of attention, and sticky situations (threatening another's social identity). Faux pas scenarios were rated as more embarrassing than the other subtypes. Consistent with this finding, we predicted faux pas would be the…
The Effect of Ballet Dance at Ire on Body and Self-Perceptions of Female Dancers
Body and self-perceptions of female ballet dancers ( N = 38) were assessed in a repeated measures design experiment investigating the effects of dance attire. Participants were randomly assigned to complete a ballet class dressed in a black leotard with pink tights or dressed in their choice of loose-fitting clothing referred to by dancers as “junk.” The next day, participants completed a ballet class in the other clothing condition. After comple…
A Locus of Control Measure as a Teaching Demonstration
268 students (M age = 20.0 yr., SD = 4.4; 68% women), randomly chosen from psychology classes, completed Rotter's I-E scale and Pettijohn's 1992 locus of control scale for class demonstration. The two sets of scores were similar but examination of reliability and validity indicated the latter was best used as a demonstration

Perceived Happiness of College Students Measured by Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
Broad categories have been suggested for the events which contribute to happiness. In 1943 Maslow might have argued that people are happy when they meet or continue to meet their basic needs in his hierarchy of needs. A survey was given to 150 college students to assess which of Maslow's levels of need is perceived to be most important to happiness. Falling or staying in love was chosen significantly more often than the other choices by undergrad…
Correlations among College Students' Grade Point Averages and American College Test Scores
This study examined whether students who did well in high school continued their success in college. For the 42 students who completed the survey, a significant correlation of .62 was found between 4-yr. high school GPA and college GPA and a significant correlation of .63 between American College Test scores and college GPA. Apparently, students who succeeded in high school continue to succeed in college
Feedback Conditions and Motor Skills Performance
Expectancy of difficulty and time feedback were manipulated in order to investigate the effects of different feedback conditions on the performance of a simple dexterity task by 144 high school students. Expected levels in the degree of difficulty did not affect the completion time of the task. Females completed sooner than males. There was no significant difference in performance scores under different conditions
Age and Human Mate Selection
Two important theories of human mate selection are sociobiology and similarity. The similarity theory predicts that people will marry others who are like themselves in characteristics such as family background, education, race, religion, and age. This theory states that until the time they graduate from school, boys and girl. are socialized most often with others of the same age, increasing the likelihood that they will be the same age when they …
Influence of Test Area Size on Social Investigation in Male Mongolian Gerbils
Forty adult male Mongolian gerbils served in this experiment which investigated the influence of test area size on social investigation. All Ss were tested in 30 × 30, 30 × 60, 30 × 90, and 100 × 100-cm enclosures for five minutes each with a three-month-old male conspecific. The Ss' behavior in the smallest area differed significantly (p < .01) from that in the three larger areas by showing less social investigation as measured by contact durati…
Effects of Imipramine on Infant Guinea Pig Distress Vocalization
The Influence of Living Area Space on Behavior in the Mongolian Gerbil
This crowding experiment was designed to study the effects of varying the size of living area space on social and nonsocial behaviors in groups of young adult Mongolian gerbils. Six groups of four (two of each sex) and three groups of eight animals were observed twice daily for three days each while in small (30 × 30 cm), medium (30 × 60 cm), and large (30 × 90 cm) living areas. The Friedman Test showed no significant differences in any behavior …
Environment and Agonistic Behavior in Male Telomian Dogs
Scott ( 1 ) suggested that physical environment may influence agonistic behavior through the physiological effects it has upon animals. Thus environments which produce responses similar to anger should have the highest levels of aggression. This preliminary study examined several environmental conditions and their effects on agonistic behavior in a group of male dogs. One group of four male Telomian dogs, 7 mo. old, served as subjects. They were …

Development of Social Behavior in Young Guinea Pigs ( Cavia Porcellus )
Twenty-four young guinea pigs from eight litters were observed with their parents to obtain a basic description of the development of social behavior. Observations of the litters were made during the first eight weeks after birth. Scores for approach behavior remained fairly stable with about 30% of the time containing some approach behavior. Scores for following behavior began with about 40% of time containing following in week 1, and declined t…

Social Desirability among Male Prisoners and College Students
Students' Knowledge of Recallability of Sentences and Strategies for Recalling Textual Prose
College students read two passages and indicated which sentences would be difficult to recall. Based on these predictions, sentences were assigned to one of three predicted recallability categories (easy, medium, and difficult). Subsequently, 24 subjects read and recalled the passages. Analysis of variance indicated that actual recall scores varied as a function of categories of predicted recallability. Also, subjects adopted a strategy whereby t…
