Having made the baby secure and ready to be bathed, I wrapped it up and handed it over to the women while I attended to the mother. It was now after midnight. The mother was in good shape: all was well. I could leave her now and go home. But I must have a look at the baby. There it was lying just as I had left it unwashed and four or five women sitting round the fire talking. 'Haven't you washed the baby yet?' said I looking at the woman who had …

  • Matthew V.18 and the Validity of the Law

    Open Access•A M Honeyman•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•1954

The interpretation of the closing words of Matt. v. 18 has been bedevilled by doctrinal preconceptions and the misapprehension of a characteristically Semitic mode of expression. The attitude towards the Law expressed by Jesus in Matt. v. 17–20 is one of unqualified acceptance and approval. The Law is to be observed in every detail and there is no suggestion that there is any limit in time to its observance. The Law is eternal, and its most minut…

  • The Syntax of the Gezer Calendar

    Open Access•A M Honeyman•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Asiatic…•1953•Referências: 1

The list of eight seasons named in the Gezer Calendar is consecutive and complete, and there is no reason for supposing that the word in that inscription has any other than its normal meaning of “lunation, month”, or that the annual cycle at Gezer in the second half of the tenth century before the common era differed from the twelve-month year found in other parts of the North-West Semitic world as well as in Mesopotamia. It follows that some of …

Opening ParagraphThe Ethiopic syllabary employed for writing the classical Ge'ez and also, with certain modifications, the contemporary South Semitic vernaculars of East Africa, was formed by super-imposing a system of auxiliary vowel-marks upon a basic consonantal alphabet; this alphabet occurs, alongside of the syllabic script, in the Old Ethiopic inscriptions of the Axumite Kingdom in the fourth century of our era, and is a derivative of the S…

  • Canaanite Pronominal Suffixes at Byblos and elsewhere

    Open Access•A M Honeyman•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Asiatic…•1941•Referências: 3

In the series of Phœnician inscriptions from Byblos, ranging in date from the thirteenth to the first centuries b.c., there appear words containing pronominal suffixes in forms not observed elsewhere, and on the basis of these forms deductions have been drawn as to the character of the dialect of Byblos and the history of the pronominal suffixes. Some of the peculiarities are more apparent than real. Thus in Byb. 5, 1.6, exhibits in place of the …
