Subsistence systems of the Late Bronze Age population in the Northwestern Crimea
The subsistence systems of ancient societies included three components: [i] the resource base, [ii] the eco-nomic model and [iii] the social sphere. The article discusses the main elements of the subsistence systems of the Sabativskaya and Belozerskaya cultures of the Late Bronze Age in Northwestern Crimea. It is shown that the resource base of Late Bronze Age societies was at the modern level or exceeded it. The basis of the economy of the Late …
Seasonal Campsites of the Sal Steppes
The paper describes the studies of the seasonal camps that steppe herders arranged in the balka systems of the Sal and Manych rivers in the Rostov region as well as their results. It also considers the model of everyday economic activities that small groups of mobile herders who occupied these sites engaged in throughout several historical periods. Extreme scarcity of material remains suggests that the everyday routine of the site residents depen…
The Isotopic Composition of the Contents of the Bronze Age Vessels
Plant food in the diet of the Early Iron Age pastoralists of Altai
Discovery of the skull of Stephanorhinus kirchbergensis (Jäger, 1839) above the Arctic Circle
The skull of the extinct rhinoceros Stephanorhinus kirchbergensis (Jäger, 1839) was discovered in the Chondon River valley (Arctic Yakutia, Russia) during the summer of 2014. This is the first find of Stephanorhinus above the Arctic Circle, expanding significantly the known geographic range of the genus. 14 C dating and geologic evidence indicate that the skull dates to between 48,000 and 70,000 yr, corresponding to Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage 4/…
Preliminary paleoenvironmental analysis of permafrost deposits at Batagaika megaslump, Yana Uplands, northeast Siberia
A megaslump at Batagaika, in northern Yakutia, exposes a remarkable stratigraphic sequence of permafrost deposits ~50–80 m thick. To determine their potential for answering key questions about Quaternary environmental and climatic change in northeast Siberia, we carried out a reconnaissance study of their cryostratigraphy and paleoecology, supported by four rangefinder 14 C ages. The sequence includes two ice complexes separated by a unit of fine…
The diet and environment of mammoths in North-East Russia reconstructed from the contents of their feces
An ancient bison from the mouth of the Rauchua River (Chukotka, Russia)
An incomplete carcass of an extinct bison, Bison ex gr. priscus , was discovered in 2012 in the mouth of the Rauchua River (69°30′N, 166°49′E), Chukotka. The carcass included the rump with two hind limbs, ribs, and large flap of hide from the abdomen and sides, several vertebrae, bones of the forelimbs and anterior autopodia, stomach with its contents, and wool. The limb bones are relatively gracile, which is unusual in bison, and a SEM study of …
