Problems in determination of skeletal lead burden in archaeological samples
Human bone lead content has been demonstrated to be related to socioeconomic status, occupation and other social and environmental correlates. Skeletal tissue samples from 135 individuals from an early nineteenth century Philadelphia cemetery (First African Baptist Church) were studied by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry and X‐ray fluorescence for lead content. To cover the years from the late eighteenth to the late twentieth century, we have selected three case studies from three different points in time that illustrate the broad outlines of the story of women and medicine: Martha Ballard, a rural midwife who practiced from 1785 to 1812; Elizabeth Blackwell, who, in 1849, became the first…
I've Called 'em Tom-ah-toes All My Life and I'm Not Going to Change
This article explores how national identities are constructed through language by examining the accent negotiations of a group of white English immigrants to the US. Pointing to the anxiety that any Americanization of their accents engendered, I show how individuals cope with claiming an identity that seems to be undermined by their speech style. They negotiated this contradiction in two ways: first, they feared that an invisible audience of Engl…
Synchrotron radiation microprobe analysis of human dental calculi from an archaeological site
The X‐ray microprobe at beamline X‐26 of the National Synchrotron Light Source (Brookhaven National Laboratory) has been used to determine minor and trace elements in small fragments of dental calculus. This material was removed from 11 individuals found in the Norman necropolis discovered recently under the church of San Lorenzo di Aversa (Caserta, southern Italy, ca. AD 900–1200).
