Studying frontier societies
Alloying Practices, Manufacture and Provenance of Late Medieval Copper-based Artefacts from the Castle of Montiel (Ciudad Real, Spain)
Fertilization Practices in Al-Andalus
This study explores agricultural fertilization practices in al-Andalus—the Medieval Islamic territory in Iberia—through textual sources and the archaeological record. Following research on the off-site record, it is suggested that the presence of Andalusi ceramic fragments in cultivated fields is not accidental but rather the result of intentional use due to their incorporation into fertilizer produced in domestic environments. Through the analys…
Alhamat
The Nasrid emirate of southern Iberia emanated power through architecture; this project aims to better understand how this was made possible, via an interdisciplinary exploration of the Alhambra monument and other Al-Andalus constructions. Initial results of archaeological campaigns, structure chronologies and communication plans undertaken in 2021 and 2022 are presented
El cerro de la Judería de Atienza
The archaeological excavations carried out in the medieval Jewish quarter of Atienza (Guadalajara) in 2022 constitute the first comprehensive approach to the archaeological site of the walled quarter in which this religious minority resided. Although there are numerous reports from written sources of the presence of an important Jewish community in Atienza during the late medieval centuries, until now there had only been a few superficial approac…
Topography and buildings of an early Islamic Andalusi city
Madīnat Ilbīra was the capital of one of the territorial organization units of the Umayyad state. The city was founded in the second half of the ninth century, and then abandoned in the eleventh century as a result of the collapse of the Caliphate of Córdoba and the transfer of the centre of the region to Granada. Its remains were located only in the nineteenth century. Modern excavations and non-invasive geophysical prospections carried out in t…
Re-Thinking the "Green Revolution" in the Mediterranean World - Corrigendum
Geophysical survey at the frontier of medieval Iberia
This paper presents the results of geophysical surveys conducted within two castles in central Iberia: the fortifications of Molina de Aragón and Atienza, both located within the modern province of Guadalajara in Spain. They represent essential case studies for understanding the transformations of the frontier societies of medieval south‐western Europe, because both were founded during the Andalusi period, both played a fundamental role at the ti…
Re-thinking the 'Green Revolution' in the Mediterranean world
From the seventh century AD, successive Islamic polities were established around the Mediterranean. Historians have linked these caliphates with the so-called 'Islamic Green Revolution'-the introduction of new crops and agricultural practices that transformed the economies of regions under Muslim rule. Increasingly, archaeological studies have problematised this largely text-based model of agrarian innovation, yet much of this research remains re…
Nuevos Datos Sobre Medina Elvira
The zooarchaeological identification of a 'Morisco' community after the Christian conquest of Granada (Spain, early 16th century)
This article presents the results of the zooarchaeological analysis of an assemblage dating to the second quarter of the 16th century that was discovered on the current university campus of Cartuja, on the outskirts of Granada (Andalusia, Spain). During the Middle Ages, this area was largely used for agricultural purposes, including as estates owned by high officials of the Nasrid dynasty, the last Islamicate polity in the Iberian Peninsula. The …
Landscapes of (re)conquest
The ‘Landscapes of (Re)Conquest’ project investigates the dynamics of medieval frontier societies in South-west Europe through the lens of the cultural landscape. It compares diverse regional borderlands in Spain, created by successive waves of Islamic and Christian conquests, with the Pyrenean frontier on either side of the Albigensian Crusade and aims to reconnect the castles of frontier authorities with their associated territories from a heri…
Religious Transformations in the Middle Ages
