The Road Through the Rust Belt
Energy, Population and the Urban Canopy
This paper examines the interaction between socio-demographic characteristics (electrical energy usage, population density, and percentage of owner occupied dwellings) and the ability of these characteristics to predict urban leaf area index using ordinary least squares regression (OLS). Urban leaf area index was estimated using a combination of field work, remote sensing, and artificial neural networks, and socio-demographic data were obtained f…
Sociospatial Applications of Remote Sensing in Urban Environments
Although the development and application of remote sensing data and techniques has been uneven, new sensors, techniques, and research questions have enabled human geographers and workers in other fields to use geospatial technologies to study sociospatial phenomena in built areas. This article describes how remote sensing data have been used in urban areas and highlights some research areas where remote sensing may continue to aid urban geographi…
Tourism, Heritage and Pilgrimage
This paper examines the tourist experience within the context of the Bahá'í Gardens in Haifa, Israel. Using Cohen's (1979) typology and Smith's (1992) continuum model, we differentiate between visitors and perceptions of the same site. The study employs a mixed methodological approach that includes participant-observation, archival documents and short-informal and unstructured interviews with Bahá'í volunteers, tourists and guides, as well as emp…
R&D production in the United States
The Frostbelt–Sunbelt shift in the US, which is thought to have accelerated during the 1970s, corresponds with recent findings that invention and innovation in the Southern and Western parts of the country have come to rival the traditional manufacturing belt. Whether research and development (R&D), a key input to new technology, shows a similar pattern is the focus of this study. It is found, that there was a shift in R&D activity to the Sunbelt…

Multiple Principals, Multiple Signals
This study suggests a key element of the principal‐agent relationship involves communication between potential principals and their agents. We suggest communications often resemble a signaling process in which potential principals indicate their interest in policy matters through multiple venues. This study models changes in the levels of rulemaking activity by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission as a functio…
Using Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems to Study Urban Quality of Life and Urban Forest Amenities

Policy Spaces
The purpose of this paper is to explore the utility of conceptualising policy institutions as neo-institutional spaces. The goal of this paper is to promote a more collaborative policy-making process that recognises the importance of cultivating and articulating shared spatial interests between policy actors. To facilitate a more collaborative process, the paper applies the principles of Lefebvre's triad to understand the internal and external po…
The Cultural Politics of Local Economic Development
This paper examines the inter–relationship between local dependence and local culture, reviews the historical development of Toledo’s industrial bases with an emphasis on automobiles and Jeep, and considers the historical context of the recent Jeep Crisis. The authors assert that the shared culture practices of Toledo residents – locality as cultures of production – contributed to community–wide mobilisation, the construction of a unique business…
Re-thinking economic development in peripheral regions
Economic development in peripheral or non-urban spaces has long been characteristic of so-called ‘branch plant’ and ‘back office’ economies. This conclusion has been premised on the explanatory potential of the product cycle model (PCM). The PCM suggests preliminary product and process innovations occur in core urban areas. Under that model, the diffusion of economic activities across space occurs only when the production process has been streaml…
