Plants and Plant Food on the Failaka Island in the Late Islamic Period. Results of the First Archaeobotanical Investigations at the Kharaib al‐Dasht Site (Kuwait)
This study examines plant‐based foods, their production, foraging and trade, as well as the flora of Failaka Island during the Late Islamic period. Archaeobotanical analysis of charred food remains, fuels and domestic waste recovered from the sediments of the Kharaib al‐Dasht site provides insights into the diet and subsistence economy of the island. The recovered seeds indicate the consumption of cultivated cereals, including free‐threshing whea…
Archaeometallurgy in northern Oman—Diachronic copper production on a smelting site in Wadi al‐Salh
Archaeometallurgical studies at the Salh site in northern Oman have provided new data on copper technology in the Bronze Age and Islamic periods. Archaeological results indicate that it may have functioned seasonally. Slag analyses have shown possible technological changes over the centuries. Smelting was carried out under reducing conditions, using oxidized copper ores weathering zone deposits. The scale of copper production at Salh1 was relativ…

Patterns of pre‐Islamic settlement in the Qumayrah microregion, northern Oman
The Qumayrah microregion lies in the mountains of northern Oman, roughly halfway between two large oasis settlements—Bat and Hili. It is situated at the crossing of routes leading from the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman into the interior. Results of a previous archaeological excavation and survey confirmed the presence of sites from prehistoric times to the Islamic period in the area. In light of both the continuity of settlement and the locat…
Failaka Island in the Late Islamic Period. Investigations at the fishing village of Kharaib al‐Dasht
The aim of the paper is to present the architectural remains and spatial organisation of the site of Kharaib al‐Dasht, a Late Islamic fishing village dating from the late seventeenth to the nineteenth century. In the course of six seasons of excavation, which started in 2013, there was uncovered a part of this extensive site, revealing remnants of a fish processing area, residential architecture and a mosque. The findings from Kharaib al‐Dasht se…
Fishing at the Late Islamic settlement in Kharā'ib al-Dasht, Failaka Island, Kuwait
The Kharā'ib al-Dasht settlement, located on the north-eastern coast of the island of Failaka in Kuwait, has been excavated systematically since 2013 by the Kuwaiti-Polish Archaeological Mission. The investigated area yielded remains dated to the Late Islamic period, from the late seventeenth to the nineteenth century. In the northernmost part of the site, a fish processing area was uncovered, while the remains of residential structures (houses 1…
The earliest settlement remains at the Ubaid‐related site of Bahra 1 (Kuwait)
The settlement at Bahra 1 lies in the As‐Sabbiya dessert, Kuwait. The site was preliminarily dated to the Ubaid 2/3 period, with four settlement phases distinguished so far. Phases A–C yielded remains of sturdy stone architecture, while the oldest Phase D was represented by a fire‐pit horizon, as well as thin and low walls, perhaps serving as foundations for light and perishable superstructures. Even in the earliest phase, Mesopotamian influence …
Failaka Archaeological Research Project. Preliminary results after the second and third season of excavation at Kharaib el-Desht in 2015–2016
Excavation at the site of Kharaib el-Desht on Failaka Island, Kuwait, began in 2013 and continued in 2015 and 2016. The second season focused on the northwestern part of the site, namely Areas 1 and 4. In the third season, work also encompassed the southeastern part of the site, Area 3, where the exploration of a stone structure was resumed. A fragment of a residential complex was also unearthed in this area. Test trenches, opened inside the ston…
Failaka Archaeological Research Project. Preliminary results after the first season of excavation at the Kharaib el-Desht site in 2013/ Appendix 1
The site of Kharaib el-Desht on Failaka Island, Kuwait, was explored by an archaeological Kuwaiti–Polish team for the first time in 2013.
