“There in that place of evil memory”. Early Anglo‐Canadian responses to the “discovery” of Auffanglager Breendonk
Based on evidence from Anglo-Canadian media, this paper argues that the discovery of Auffanglager Breendonk prompted significant responses in the fall of 1944. Historical writing on liberation needs to include a variety of sites to show how the western media confronted skepticism about atrocities, and offered reflections on the reasons for the war and the challenges for the postwar world

This article challenges the assumption that the Canadian Jewish community embraced the discourse and potential of multiculturalism rapidly and enthusiastically.
