Queering Contemporary Comedy
Utilizing queer theory, a textual analysis of 50 episodes of the FX horror-comedy series What We Do in the Shadows (2019–) resulted in three overarching themes: (1) representation of different forms of queerness and open expression of character identities, (2) normalization of queer identity and resistance to homophobia, and (3) inclusivity of relational configuration beyond queer-based narratives. Findings demonstrate the series promotes a queer…
Evaluating the NFL-nonprofit partnerships to support the LGBTQ+ community through the lens of the symbiotic sustainability model
The Queer Clubhouse? Bar culture, sports media, and LGBTQ+ communities
In the following article I analyze sports bars for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) communities via a combination of semi-structured interviews, field studies, and archival research. In particular, I examine how sports and non-normative sexual and gender identities influence, and are influenced by, media “in situ.” I also seek to better understand how LGBTQ+ sports cultures are constructed by the owners of these bars, by me…
Free Speech or Free to Hate
This article presents a critical discourse analysis of groups on the free speech social media platform Gab that were intended to be LGBTQ+-friendly but became spaces of queerphobia. Results indicate that Gab users deployed discourses of difference to situate the platform as heteronormative and to denigrate the LGBTQ+ community. In particular, discourses utilized in the name of free speech were used to establish LGBTQ+ individuals as abominations,…
Encouraging Parental Sexual Communication with Teen Sons
Parent-child sexual communication is associated with myriad positive sex-related outcomes for young people, but these conversations tend to be infrequent and limited in scope. Using the Social Norms Approach, we hypothesized that learning that other parents talk with their children about sex-related topics would motivate parents to talk about more sex-related topics with their son. In an online experiment, parents in the United States (N = 378) w…
Gay Men and Feminist Women in the Fight for Equality
Over the past decade various events in the United States have provoked a renewed focus on social activism. Social movements related to racial justice, environmental activism, women's rights, affordable housing, LGBTQ+ rights, gun control, and labor rights, to name just a few, have dominated mainstream news reporting and social media postings. This attention has also engendered a conversation about coalition building and the ways in which groups c…
You're a Cog in a System that Needs to Work”
A thematic analysis of interviews with lesbian, gay, and transgender US athletes who were out while playing varsity collegiate sports is examined for LGBTQ and athletic identifications. Conceptualizing being out as an ongoing process, we asked participants to describe their experiences over the years they were playing. Participants described athletic identifications as superordinate to and predating LGBTQ identifications. Although they initially …
Branding being true
In this article, the author examines Nike's engagement with LGBTQ + communities through its Be True products and campaigns. An analysis of Nike's official statements about the line, and its advertising campaigns, illuminates how Nike encourages an incitement to visibility for LGBTQ + individuals without attending to the material consequences of doing so. The author also unpacks how Nike yokes the embodiment of idealized identity traits to its pro…
Gayservatives on Gab
In the United States, LGBTQ+ individuals are often imagined as inherently politically progressive, but this assumption overlooks the experiences of self-identified LGBTQ+ conservatives. Likewise, although social media platforms are recognized as spaces of identity and community production for LGBTQ+ people generally, less work has considered how they provide a similar forum for 'gayservatives.' In response, this article engages in a critical disc…
Now that They're Out
In recent years, more college athletes have publicly identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer (LGBTQ). Our study seeks to move past media celebrations and controversies of "coming out" and examine actual experiences of LGBTQ athletes and their teammates. A survey of 259 LGBTQ athletes and teammates of LGBTQ athletes was conducted. We examined concerns about being or playing with LGBTQ athletes, sources of homophobic languag…
Documenting Difference
With the 249th Pick
This article examines the sporting discourses that surrounded Michael Sam’s attempt to play in the National Football League (NFL). It argues that Sam would inevitably be described as a failure because of his inability to exist within the logics of heteronormativity and situates his experience within the framework of neoliberalism and Whiteness to better understand how both function as mediating factors in his ability to attain success. Rather tha…

The Dynamics of Caregiving for a Demented Elder Among Black and White Families
Caregiving dynamics were studied in a sample of 157 Black caregivers of elders suffering from Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. By comparison with White caregivers (N = 472), there were fewer spouses and more nonspouse-nonchild caregivers among Blacks. With control exercised on background and socioeconomic variables, race differences in caregiving appraisal were found. Blacks showed more favorable scores on indices of traditional caregivin…
