Firm and the Formless
This volume is woven around the idea that wholeness (the firm) and fragmentation (risking formlessness) alternate in human affairs. This theme is applied to the history and the present condition of Australian Aboriginals. Their religion is seen as a way to bolster a precarious identity and to affirm order in an existence which would otherwise become formless. It deals with totemism as a form of ordering a variety of often conflicting identities. …

Time and Transcendence in a Dialectical Sociology of Religion
This paper is concerned with the development of a dialectical approach to the sociology of religion. Within this constructive framework, two basic categories — transcendence and time — are situated and analyzed. Empirical materials from both primitive and modem social settings are considered within this interpretive endeavor

Theory and Data on the Religious Behaviour of Migrants

Mixed Marriages in Australia
As IN other Anglo-Saxon countries, Australians think of interfaith marriages as CatholicProtestant marriages. There are too few Jews in Australia to make a Jewish-Gentile marriage at all common. In the 1961 Census, 2,465 or eight percent of all married Jews, were married to a Christian spouse. As elsewhere the Jews apparently realize that ethnic survival depends on whether or not they follow the injunction of Deuteronomy 7:1-4 not to make marriag…

Religion and political allegiance
What are the religious differences between Australians who prefer the Australian Labor party, the Democratic Labor party, or the Liberal/Country parties? Before we answer this question from the data of the ‘religion in Australia’ survey 1 it may be useful for at least some readers to give a short summary of the relationship between denominations and voting patterns. I apologise to those readers for whom all this is old ground

Religion and Competition
Invariably the discussion about the function of religion centers around its integrative potential. However, this paper develops some hypotheses about the various ways Western religious institutions and ideologies compete. The author suggests that this takes place on at least three levels: (a) On the level of institutional loyalty, those religious organizations which had to compete have invariably turned out to have a better hold on their membersh…

Marginality and commitment as hidden variables in the Jellinck/Weber/Merton theses on the Calvinist Ethic
This article is a modest and frankly speculative attempt to draw the atten tion to two variables which (a) could possibly be 'behind' the more tradi tional ones, such as asceticism, objectivity, efficiency, rationality and individualism mentioned as salient for the original development of rational capitalism, natural science and modern democracy, and (b) could possibly provide an interesting fit with sociological theory and the sociology of relig…

The identity model of religion
The model of religion attempts to provide a comprehensive, social scientific accounting scheme covering a large variety of data from both ancient and modem religions. Rather ambitiously, it further attempts to fit in both the prevailing anthropological, psychological, and sociological theories of man and society, and the contemporary ethological accounts of primate behavior. It is only in the last ten years that a dozen or so sociologists in as m…
