The present article highlights the way in which a central African worldview served as the structural backbone for the development of the caboclo spirit as conceptualized by countless devotees in Bahia, Brazil. In this article, I analyze the whys of ethnomusicological translation before arguing for a reframing of translation as both polyvocal and polydiscursive. To do this, I analyze aspects of A. J. Ellis's translation of Hermann von Helmholtz's Die Lehre von den Tonempfindungen als physiologische Grundlage für die Theorie der Musik as well as the early twentieth-century oeuvre of famed Brazilian writer and musicologist Mário de Andrade. A Respectable Spell
This book is primarily about the social history and musical changes of samba in Rio de Janeiro from 1917 to the early 1930s, looking chiefly at the era’s commercial recordings. The year 1917 marks the first time that a popular song designated as “samba” became a widespread Carnival success in the city. In the early 1930s, a new style of samba became dominant, such that it is still today the genre’s primary point of reference. The book proposes an…
Musical Repatriation as Method
In ethnomusicology, discussions about repatriation have tended to revolve around “applied” issues. Often left out of the conversation, however, is that when treated as a methodological tool, repatriation can also contribute in profound ways to more theoretical concerns in ethnomusicology.
