  • Mapping past forests in the Atacama Desert, Chile

Open Access•Elena Balmaceda-Baraona, Víctor Méndez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2026

The last decades have seen a significant increase in the use of spatial and remote sensing analytical techniques in the field of archaeology, leading to new perspectives and research questions. However, the full potential of these methods remains largely unexplored. Albeit the focus on site detection and resource mapping has been gaining traction, we have yet to examine the great potential these techniques could have to support various tasks, suc…

  • Silvopastoralism and the shaping of forest patches in the Atacama Desert during the Formative Period (ca. 3000–1500 years BP)

    Open Access•Virginia Mcrostie, P Babot et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2022•Citada por: 1•Referências: 15

During the Formative period by the Late-Holocene (ca. 3000–1500 BP), semi-sedentary and sedentary human occupations had emerged in the oases, salares, and riverine systems in the central depression (2400–1000 masl) of the Atacama Desert, northern Chile (19–25°S). This hyperarid core was marginally occupied during the post-Pleistocene and middle Holocene droughts. Settlement on these lower belts was accompanied by a rise in humidity, the introduct…

  • A modeling approach to estimate the historical population size of the Patagonian Kawésqar people

    Open Access•Sergio A Estay, Daniela N López et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2022•Referências: 7

The study of human-gatherers societies’ demography used to be a difficult task due to the lack of direct evidence to support the estimations. This is the case of several human groups from Pacific Patagonia whose historical population size estimations are controversial. This study estimated the historical population size for the Kawésqar people using direct and indirect evidence. Thus, we collated past estimations from experts and encounter rates …

  • Geohistorical records of the Anthropocene in Chile

Open Access•Eugenia Gayó, Eugenia M Gayo et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2019

The deep-time dynamics of coupled socio-ecological systems at different spatial scales is viewed as a key framework to understand trends and mechanisms that have led to the Anthropocene. By integrating archeological and paleoenvironmental records, we test the hypothesis that Chilean societies progressively escalated their capacity to shape national biophysical systems as socio-cultural complexity and pressures on natural resources increased over …
