A semi-quantitative archaeothermometer based on feldspar and volcanic glass compositions in ancient ceramics from the Kibi region, Japan
In this study, we analyzed the chemical compositions of feldspar and volcanic glass clasts in haniwa from kofuns and Sue ware from the Sabukaze kiln site, both in the Kibi region, southwestern Japan, to estimate the thermal conditions of ceramic firing in the 5th–8th centuries CE. Based on the coexistence of molten and unmolten feldspar rims, the solidus temperatures were estimated at ∼ 1050°C–1150°C for haniwa and ∼ 1150°C–1200°C for Sue ware. V…
Petrological characterization for material provenance of haniwa earthenware from mounded tombs in the Kibi region, Japan
Clay material of haniwa in the Kibi region is mainly derived from weathered granitoids. • The differentiation manner of granitic magma was different between localities. • Mixing of three widespread tephras is a common characteristic of haniwa from Kibi. To determine the provenance of the materials used in the production of haniwa earthenware unearthed from mounded tombs ( kofun ) in the Kibi region (modern Okayama Prefecture) during the Kofun per…

Die Rechtswissenschaft unter dem Kriegsregime in Japan
The Jurisprudence under the wartime regime in Japan: 1931–1952 . In 2016, a book was published in Tokyo with the title “Senji-taisei to Hōgakusha: 1931–1952” (The Wartime Regime and Legal Scholars: 1931–1952) as the first collective work about sixteen diverse legal scholars under the economic and political system of total war in Japan. This invited article summarizes the main points of the book from the viewpoint of one of its editors and explain…

Developing one corpus‐based grammar textbook about irregular multi‐verb sequences in English
This article addresses the development of a corpus‐based grammar textbook on four types of irregular multi‐verb sequences in English— V‐V , V‐and‐V , V‐to‐V , and V‐Ving . Since many current grammar textbooks have seldom treated these four types of irregular multi‐verb sequences, this article empirically demonstrates the need to develop corpus‐based grammar textbooks. Our framework to develop the corpus‐based grammar textbook adopted in this arti…

The invention of lacquer technology is significant in history as the first evidence of the use of an organic substance in creating durable coloured objects. By focusing on the evidence from the Jomon Period, Japan, this article clarifies the nature of complex technology and knowledge required for lacquer production, presents how lacquer technology enhanced our creative ability, and discusses its significance in human history. Lacquer technology w…

Subsistence, Sedentism, and Social Complexity among Jomon Hunter-Gatherers of the Japanese Archipelago
The past of others
Since the first decade of this century, public monuments to the memory of "comfort women" - women and girls forced into sexual service from the 1930s through 1945, by the Japanese Imperial Army - have been established in the United States by the Korean diaspora. This paper analyses recent memorials in the suburbs of New York that have experienced rapid immigration from Korea since the 1990s. The memorials met local resistance due to perceptions o…
