The science of child and adolescent mental health in Brazil
Factors Associated with Personal Recovery Among Brazilians with Schizophrenia
INTRODUCTION: Personal recovery has been the focus of mental health policy and practice in recent years. AIM/QUESTION: This study aimed to assess personal recovery and its associated factors in a Brazilian sample of people with schizophrenia. METHODS: This study included 104 people with schizophrenia attending an university outpatient psychiatric center. Personal Recovery was measured using the short Brazilian version of the Recovery Assessment S…
Impact of life adversity and gene expression on psychiatric symptoms in children and adolescents
Among these nine genes, NR3C1, which encodes a glucocorticoid receptor, is by far the most investigated, being associated with depressive symptoms, early life adversity, and stress. While further research is needed to fully understand the complex relationship between gene expression, life adversities, and psychopathology, our findings provide valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying mental disorders
Replication of a predictive model for youth ADHD in an independent sample from a developing country
BACKGROUND: Very few predictive models in Psychiatry had their performance validated in independent external samples. A previously developed multivariable demographic model for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) accurately predicted young adulthood ADHD using clinical and demographical information collected in childhood in three samples from developed countries, but failed to replicate its performance in a sample from a developing co…
Urban distance to mental healthcare units and public transport increases duration of untreated psychosis in first-episode patients
Background: There is a growing interest in environmental and social determinants of mental health. However, how distance to healthcare and public transportation affect illness is neglected in schizophrenia research. Here, we are interested in how the availability of mental healthcare and the ways to reach it may be associated with psychosis. Aims: We aim to investigate the association between distances to healthcare units and subway stations and …
Mapping genomic loci implicates genes and synaptic biology in schizophrenia
Associations between Family Functioning and Maternal Behavior on Default Mode Network Connectivity in School-Age Children
Background: Most early children's experiences will occur in a family context; therefore, the quality of this environment is critical for development outcomes. Not many studies have assessed the correlations between brain functional connectivity (FC) in important areas such as the default mode network (DMN) and the quality of parent-child relationships in school-age children and early adolescence. The quality of family relationships and maternal b…
Development and validation of the Brazilian Portuguese Version of the Reported and Intended Behaviour Scale (Ribs-BP)
The object of the study was to translate and validate the Reported and Intended Behaviour Scale (RIBS) into Brazilian Portuguese. A native Brazilian speaker fluent in English translated the RIBS into Brazilian Portuguese. Comprehensibility and face validity were assessed through discussions with mental health professionals and volunteers recruited from the community. Brazilian Portuguese version of the questionnaire was back-translated into Engli…
Differences Between Self-Reported Psychotic Experiences, Clinically Relevant Psychotic Experiences, and Attenuated Psychotic Symptoms in the General Population
Purpose: Psychotic experiences in childhood (such as hearing voices or being suspicious) represent an important phenotype for early intervention. However, these experiences can be defined in several ways: self-reported psychotic experiences (SRPE) rely exclusively on the child's report, clinically validated psychotic experiences (CRPE) are based on clinical assessment, and attenuated psychotic symptoms (APS) represents a categorization to do with…
Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Associations of Temperament and Mental Disorders in Youth
Evaluating the effectiveness of a training program that builds teachers’ capability to identify and appropriately refer middle and high school students with mental health problems in Brazil
The strategy was partially effective but could be improved mainly by extending its duration, and including discussion of actual cases
Adaptação transcultural e consistência interna do Early Trauma Inventory (ETI)
Mental health research in Brazil
The objective of this descriptive study was to map mental health research in Brazil, providing an overview of infrastructure, financing and policies mental health research. As part of the Atlas-Research Project, a WHO initiative to map mental health research in selected low and middle-income countries, this study was carried out between 1998 and 2002. Data collection strategies included evaluation of governmental documents and sites and questionn…
