Gradational Thresholds and Landform Singularity
Gradational Thresholds and Landform Singularity
Geomorphic threshold conditions have been identifed at which stream patterns change and gully initiation occurs. For both, the threshold conditions are defined by the parameter of “relative shear stress” which is a measure of the energy state of the system and is based on known values of stream slope and mean annual discharge (for patterns) or drainage area (for gullies). The probability of passing from a stream pattern to another, or from stable…
Ephemeral-Stream Processes
Three unstable ephemeral-stream channels (arroyos), which drain source areas that have high sediment yields ranging from predominantly sand (Arroyo Calabasas) to a mixture of sand, silt, and clay (Sand Creek) to largely silt and clay (Sage Creek), were resurveyed to provide data on the rates and mechanics of erosion and sedimentation processes during periods ranging from 14 to 22 yr. Channel morphology changed significantly. Erosion occurred thro…
The Physical Geography (Geomorphology) of William Morris Davis
Canadian north and centre, an area larger than that of Quebec and the Maritime Provinces combined. Their depth is variable but may extend to about 100 feet (c. 30 m). Muskeg is thus a significant feature of the landscape and is also an important organic resource, so that the problem of its wise development is associated with many other aspects of the northern environment, such as water supplies, forest resources and the exploitation of petroleum,…
Geomorphic Thresholds
Geomorphic thresholds were defined initially as the condition at which there is a significant landform change without a change of external controls such as base level, climate and land use. Landforms evolve to a condition of incipient instability following which change or failure occurs. Subsequently, through usage, the definition has been broadened to include abrupt landform change as a result of progressive change of external controls. Therefor…
Time, space, and causality in geomorphology
Distinctions between cause and effect in landform development depend on the span of time involved and the size of the geomorphic system under consideration. Depending upon the temporal and areal frame of reference, variables such as channel morphology may be either dependent or independent. In terms of geologic time, landforms represent a stage in an erosion cycle and are dependent on time. On a short-term basis, components of geomorphic systems …
