  • The Sardinian Mammoth’s Evolutionary History

Open Access•Maria Rita Palombo, Marco Zedda et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2024

The dwarf Sardinian mammoth, Mammuthus lamarmorai, is a well-known species frequently cited in the literature; however, the fossil record of the Pleistocene Sardinian mammoths mainly consists of isolated remains (an incomplete skeleton from Guardia Pisano Hill, isolated teeth and a largely incomplete tibia from different localities, and some footprints from Funtana Morimenta), which have been found in sites presumably ranging in age from the late…

  • Sperm whales in the Neolithic Mediterranean

    Open Access•Maria Grazia Melis, Marco Zedda•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2021•Referências: 7

The exceptional find of the tooth of a sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) at Monte d'Accoddi adds to the documentation on the possible presence, and exploitation by humans, of cetaceans in the prehistoric Mediterranean. The dating (3638-3378 BC) appears to make it the oldest cetacean find in Sardinia

  • Scaling of Haversian canal surface area to secondary osteon bone volume in ribs and limb bones

    Open Access•John G Skedros, Alex N Knight et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2013•Citada por: 5•Referências: 87

Studies of secondary osteons in ribs have provided a great deal of what is known about remodeling dynamics. Compared with limb bones, ribs are metabolically more active and sensitive to hormonal changes, and receive frequent low‐strain loading. Optimization for calcium exchange in rib osteons might be achieved without incurring a significant reduction in safety factor by disproportionally increasing central canal size with increased osteon size (…
