Imaging Evaluation of Skull Trepanation Using Radiography and CT
Cranial surgery as practised by the prehistoric and present-day traditional medicine man is the oldest known and one of the highest surgical achievements in the history of medicine. This study examines morbidity and mortality of this ancient surgical procedure by re-examining and reviewing reports of 71 completely trepanned skulls from pre-Columbian Peru by three techniques: gross visual observation and palpation; radiography; and CT. The specime…

An analysis of chronic osteomyelitis of the tibia in a pre‐columbian human population using radiographic–pathological correlation
Radiologic‐pathologic correlation is employed in pre‐Columbian tibia specimens as a means of understanding the characteristic alterations induced by untreated chronic osteomyelitis
Accelerator Radiocarbon Dates on Charcoal, Shell, and Human Bone from the Del Mar Site, California
Accelerator radiocarbon dates on shell, charcoal, and human bone samples are an indication that human activity at the Del Mar site dates to 5000 B.P. and possibly from 7000 B.P. The shell and charcoal fragments were dislocated stratigraphically by extensive bioturbation and provide evidence that accelerator dates on extremely small samples should be used with caution. Certain depositional environments will require multiple dating within a site be…
