  • Philanthrocapitalism as wealth management strategy

    Open Access•Jessica Sklair, Luna Glucksberg•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•2021•Citada por: 12•Referências: 20

In the resurgence of interest in inheritance flows following the publication of Piketty's work, little attention has been paid to the affective practices that ensure the success of inheritance processes as wealth moves down generations of dynastic families. This article explores these practices, drawing on research among wealth managers, philanthropy advisors, family offices and their clients, to show how philanthropy is promoted by advisors to t…

  • Social Polarisation at the Local Level

Open Access•I Koch, Mark Fransham et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology•2021•Citada por: 5•Referências: 48

This article examines how intensifying inequality in the UK plays out at a local level, in order to bring out the varied ways polarisation takes place 'on the ground'. It brings a community analysis buttressed by quantitative framing to the study of economic, spatial and relational polarisation in four towns in the UK. We distinguish differing dynamics of 'elite-based' polarisation (in Oxford and Tunbridge Wells) and 'poverty-based' polarisation …

  • A gendered ethnography of elites

    Open Access•Luna Glucksberg•ARTICLE•Focaal•2018•Citada por: 21•Referências: 24

This article offers a critical ethnography of the reproduction of elites and inequalities through the lenses of class and gender. The successful transfer of wealth from one generation to the next is increasingly a central concern for the very wealthy. This article shows how the labor of women from elite and non-elite backgrounds enables and facilitates the accumulation of wealth by elite men. From covering "the home front" to investing heavily in…

  • A view from the top

    Luna Glucksberg•ARTICLE•City•2016•Citada por: 9•Referências: 10

The paper argues that gaining an effective perspective on the London housing crisis requires an understanding of what is happening at the highest levels of the real estate market (£2 million+). It is based on data collected over two and a half years (2013--15) of research amongst the London elites through the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) project ‘Life in the Alpha Territories: London's “Super-Rich” Neighbourhoods’. It unpacks terms…

  • Fighting gentrification in the neoliberal university

    Open Access•Mara Ferreri, Luna Glucksberg•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2016•Citada por: 1•Referências: 13

The demolition of social housing figures prominently in the most recent wave of state-led gentrification in London: fighting these processes as academics and activists presents ethical, methodological and strategic issues. We have chosen to address these issues by cautiously drawing a symbolic parallel between the conditions faced by social tenants in London, threatened with the destruction of their homes and communities, and the challenges faced…

  • We Was Regenerated Out”

    Open Access•Luna Glucksberg•ARTICLE•Valuation Studies•2014

This article looks at well documented processes of urban regeneration and community displacement in the inner-city through an innovative anthropological perspective focused on concepts of waste and value. Using the notion of symbolic devaluation of the working classes developed by Skeggs (1997; 2004), it traces their exclusion from recycling practices while at the same time the estates they live on are being regenerated. Raising questions about t…
