  • Tectonic, hydrogeologic, and climatic controls on Late Holocene dune formation, China Lake basin, Indian Wells Valley, California, USA

    Open Access•Nicholas Lancaster, Steven N Bacon et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2022

Analysis of patterns of faulting and hydrogeology, stratigraphic and sedimentologic studies, and luminescence dating of aeolian deposits in China Lake basin provide new perspectives on the origins and development of Late Holocene dunes and sand ramps in the seismically active Indian Wells Valley of eastern California. Aeolian dune and sand sheet deposits were sourced from alluvial material derived from granitic rocks of the south-eastern Sierra N…

  • Introduction to the 50 th Anniversary Issue of Quaternary Research

    Open Access•Derek B Booth, Alan R Gillespie et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2020

Core Vema 28-238 preserves an excellent oxygen isotope and magnetic stratigraphy and is shown to contain undisturbed sediments deposited continuously through the past 870,000 yr. Detailed correlation with sequences described by Emiliani in the Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean is demonstrated. The boundaries of 22 stages representing alternating times of high and low Northern Hemisphere ice volume are recognized and dated. The record is interpreted in…

  • On the formation of desert loess

    Open Access•Nicholas Lancaster•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2020

Sequences of quartz-rich coarse (20−63 μm) silt occur in many low- and midlatitude unglaciated arid and semiarid areas and have been termed “desert loess.” The processes by which these deposits are generated have been debated for decades. All hypotheses to explain their origin seek to provide mechanisms for the generation of silt-sized material without glacial grinding, which is the main process involved in the production of coarse silt at high l…

  • A continuous 4000-year lake-level record of Owens Lake, south-central Sierra Nevada, California, USA

    Open Access•Steven N Bacon, Nicholas Lancaster et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2018

Reconstruction of lake-level fluctuations from landform and outcrop evidence typically involves characterizing periods with relative high stands. We developed a new approach to provide water-level estimates in the absence of shoreline evidence for Owens Lake in eastern California by integrating landform, outcrop, and existing lake-core data with wind-wave and sediment entrainment modeling of lake-core sedimentology. We also refined the late Holoc…

  • The Inqua Dunes Atlas chronologic database

Open Access•Nicholas Lancaster, Stephen Wolfe et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2016

The INQUA Dunes Atlas project has developed a global digital database of chronological information for periods of inland or continental sand dune accumulation and stabilization. The database comprises information on the site location (including coordinates), dune type, and stratigraphic context, pertinent analytical information (e.g. luminescence procedures), and literature citations to the original data source. This paper discusses the backgroun…

  • Holocene dune formation at Ash Meadows National Wildlife Area, Nevada, USA

    Open Access•Nicholas Lancaster, Shannon A Mahan•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2012

Small isolated dune fields in the northern Mojave Desert are important centers of biodiversity and archaeological occupation sites. Currently dunes at Ash Meadows, Nevada, are stabilized by vegetation and are experiencing erosion of their upwind margins, indicating a negative sediment budget. New OSL ages from dunes at Ash Meadows indicate continuous eolian accumulation from 1.5 to 0.8 ka, with further accumulation around 0.2 ka. Prior studies (e…

  • Response of aeolian systems to Holocene climatic and hydrologic changes on the northern margin of the Sahara

    Open Access•Christopher S Swezey, C Swezey et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1999•Citada por: 2•Referências: 1

Four millennial-scale latest Pleistocene to Holocene climatic cycles are recorded by aeolian-lacus trine strata along the southern margin of Chott Rharsa, a playa situated within an active tectonic basin along the northern margin of the Sahara Desert in Tunisia. Cycles are characterized by (1) a humid phase of dunefield stabilization and high lake levels, and (2) an arid phase of playa desiccation and deflation with dunefield construction. The cy…

  • Infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) dating of late-Holocene aeolian sands in the Mojave Desert, California, USA

    Open Access•Ann G Wintle, Nicholas Lancaster et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1994•Referências: 2

A new method of dating potassium feldspar grains from aeolian sands is demonstrated. A luminescence signal is measured whilst the grains are stimulated in the near infrared at 880 nm. A surface sand sample gave an age of 40 ± 15 years, showing that this method is able to provide ages for very young samples. Since the measurement of an infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) signal can take place with a short infrared exposure, the IRSL signal of …

  • The Namib Sand Sea

    Ian Livingstone, Nicholas Lancaster•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1990•Citada por: 4

Lancaster (geology, Arizona State U.) reports on investigations of dune forms, processes and sediments in the Namib Sand Sea of southwestern Africa, which are used to develop models for the formation of dunes and sand seas and their rock equivalents. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Oregon, USA. Contents: Regional physiographic & climatic setting; Dune morphology & morphometry: Dune sediments; Dune processes; Controls of dune morpho…

  • Late Quaternary Palaeoenvironments of Southern Africa

    N Roberts, Nicholas J Roberts et al.•REVIEW•Geographical Journal•1989

Palaeoenvironmental research in Southern Hemisphere mid-latitude continents once focused almost exclusively on sedimentary and geomorphic sequences interpreted in terms of pluvials and interpluvials. New techniques have led to the development of more dynamic models. This book summarizes evidence from such diverse sources as dune systems, stable isotopes, pollen, fossil bones, and the distribution of Stone Age people to show the effects of climact…
