Pain-Related Injustice Appraisals, Sickle Cell Stigma, and Racialized Discrimination in the Youth with Sickle Cell Disease
Evaluation of a Community Covid-19 Vaccine Ambassador Train-the-Trainer Program
Racially minoritized groups are more likely to experience COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and have lower vaccination rates. As part of a multi-phase community-engaged project, we developed a train-the-trainer program in response to a needs assessment. "Community vaccine ambassadors" were trained to address COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. We evaluated the program's feasibility, acceptability, and impact on participant confidence for COVID-19 vaccination co…
Psychologists as leaders in equitable science
Psychologists have an ethical responsibility to advance health equity and can play a significant role in improving health care experiences for families racialized as Black, including those with sickle cell disease (SCD), a group of genetic blood disorders primarily affecting communities of color. Parents of children with SCD report experiences of stigma and discrimination due to racism in the health care system. The current commentary describes t…
The influence of perceived racial bias and health-related stigma on quality of life among children with sickle cell disease
Objectives: Individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD) experience significant health problems that may result in unpredictable pain episodes and frequent healthcare utilization. Disparities in clinical care may contribute to health-related stigma and racial bias for this majority African-American/Black population. There is less known about the influence of health-related stigma and racial bias on the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of chil…
Halo or horn? A qualitative study of mothers’ experiences with feeding children during the first year following bariatric surgery
Translating sickle cell guidelines into practice for primary care providers with Project Echo
STORM TeleECHO has the potential to increase implementation of the NHLBI evidence-based guidelines, especially increased use of hydroxyurea, resulting in improvements in the quality of care and outcomes for children and young adults with SCD. This model could be replicated in other pediatric chronic illness conditions to improve PCP knowledge and confidence in delivering evidence-based care

Understanding the Experiences of Youth Living With Sickle Cell Disease
A Photovoice pilot was conducted with youth living with sickle cell disease (SCD), in order to further understand their lived experience and examine the acceptability, feasibility, and utility of this method in this population. SCD is an inherited genetic condition whose primary symptom is severe pain. Youth were able to reflect on their experiences with SCD using Photovoice and the adapted SHOWeD method. Parents and youth found Photovoice to be …
