  • Discussion Note on Hasok Chang: Realism for Realistic People

    Open Access•P Hoyningen-Huene, K Brad Wray•ARTICLE•Journal for General Philosophy of…•2025

We first discuss Chang’s criticism of the correspondence theory of truth and of what he calls ‘correspondence realism’. We think that correspondence can be rescued if properly reshaped. We then take up Chang’s alternative to the correspondence theory of truth, his ‘truth-by-operational-coherence’, which we think does not fit many truths from social life. The topic of realism, implicitly present already in the previous topics, is subsequently expl…

  • Revisiting Friedman’s “On the methodology of positive economics” (“F53”)

    P Hoyningen-Huene•ARTICLE•Methodus•2021

In this paper, I shall defend two main claims. First, Friedman’s famous paper “On the methodology of positive economics” (“F53”) cannot be properly understood without taking into account the influence of three authors who are neither cited nor mentioned in the paper: Max Weber, Frank Knight, and Karl Popper. I shall trace both their substantive influence on F53 and the historical route by which this influence took place. Once one has understood t…

The paper deals with the interrelations between the philosophy, sociology and historiography of science in Thomas Kuhn’s theory of scientific development. First, the historiography of science provides the basis for both the philosophy and sociology of science in the sense that the fundamental questions of both disciplines depend on the principles of the form of historiography employed. Second, the fusion of the sociology and philosophy of science…
