  • Hunting in a Hostile Climate

    Open Access•Danielle J Lindemann, Anna Doggett et al.•ARTICLE•Men and Masculinities•2022•Citada por: 2•Referências: 43

Based on prior research about other male-dominated leisure pursuits, we might expect game hunting to present a hostile climate for its women participants. However, our qualitative analysis of 293 threads posted between 2005 and 2019 on an online hunting message board suggests that women were welcomed within the pastime. While they did not overtly exclude women from their ranks, however, posters curated the boundary between masculinity and feminin…

  • What’s Your Reality? Evaluating Sources and Addressing “Fake News”

    Open Access•Danielle J Lindemann•ARTICLE•Sociological Forum•2020•Citada por: 1•Referências: 4

It is important to know where the 2020 presidential candidates stand on today’s issues, but it’s also critical to know how they mobilize evidence to arrive at these opinions. What are their media diets? How do they decide what’s news? And how do they evaluate what news is true? What forms of expertise do they privilege in making decisions about reality? Sociologists, as experts ourselves, hold a particular stake in the answers to these questions.…

  • Commuter Spouses

    Danielle J Lindemann, Danielle Lindemann•BOOK•Commuter Spouses•2019

What can we learn from looking at married partners who live apart? In Commuter Spouses , Danielle Lindemann explores how couples cope when they live apart to meet the demands of their dual professional careers. Based on the personal stories of almost one-hundred commuter spouses, Lindemann shows how these atypical relationships embody (and sometimes disrupt!) gendered constructions of marriage in the United States. These narratives of couples who…

  • Desperate Fortunes

    Open Access•Danielle J Lindemann, Teresa M Boyer•ARTICLE•Labor Studies Journal•2019•Citada por: 1•Referências: 35

Much recent labor research has highlighted the increasing reliance on contingent employment. We apply intersectionality theory and Collins’s concept of the “matrix of domination” to data from focus groups with immigrant Latina “perma-temp” warehouse workers ( n = 40), finding that the structural (dis-)organization of perma-temping serves as an instrument of domination and is crucial to our respondents’ experiences of work. However, the instabilit…

  • I Don't Take My Tuba to Work at Microsoft

    Open Access•Danielle J Lindemann, Steven J Tepper et al.•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2017•Citada por: 5•Referências: 49

Drawing on data from the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project ( N = 13,581) and the Teagle Study of double majors ( N = 1,736), we examine how arts alumni and students view their creative skills as transferable across contexts. Based on these preliminary analyses, we find that people with similar training interpret the relationship between their creativity and their work differently. We postulate that variations in creative identity may be one …

  • Going the Distance

    Open Access•Danielle J Lindemann•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2017•Citada por: 2•Referências: 50

Commuter spouses-dual-income couples who live apart for their professional careers-have been the subject of relatively little scholarly research. Another, largely theoretical body of scholarship has explored the fundamental cultural tension generated by the simultaneous embracing of personal autonomy and the institution of marriage in the United States, although few scholars have explicitly sought to understand how these seemingly conflicting cul…

  • An Asymmetrical Portrait

    Open Access•Danielle J Lindemann, Carly Ann Rush et al.•ARTICLE•Social Currents•2016•Citada por: 6•Referências: 14

While a large body of work has focused on gendered income inequalities in other fields, virtually no literature has explored this phenomenon within artistic careers. We use the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP)—a nationwide survey of 33,801 individuals who have received degrees in the arts—to assess the gendered earnings gap for artists and for nonartists. We find that the gendered earnings gap is comparable for artists and nonartist…

  • What Happens to Artistic Aspirants Who Do Not 'Succeed''? A Research Note From the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project

    Open Access•Danielle J Lindemann•ARTICLE•Work and Occupations•2013•Citada por: 8•Referências: 14

Scholars have often portrayed the arts as a winner-take-all market. However, data from the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project suggest that many artistic aspirants who do not work within the arts still incorporate artistic elements within their diverse careers and often engage in art avocationally. Further, these individuals continue to mobilize the skills and human capital involved in arts training in diverse realms. There are compelling reas…

  • BDSM as therapy

    Open Access•Danielle J Lindemann, Danielle Lindemann•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2011

While I was conducting field research on professional dominatrices (‘pro-dommes’), an unexpected discourse emerged: respondents repeatedly characterized themselves as ‘therapists’, speaking about their work as a form of psychological treatment for their clients. This article examines the way they speak about BDSM (Bondage, Discipline, Sadism, Masochism) as therapeutic. Data are derived from in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 66 female pro-…

  • Will the Real Dominatrix Please Stand Up

    Open Access•Danielle J Lindemann, Danielle Lindemann•ARTICLE•Sociological Forum•2010•Citada por: 9•Referências: 8

Professional dominatrices (pro-dommes) are a group that has received little sociological attention. I use Pierre Bourdieu’s claims about art as a tool for illuminating important tensions within this corner of social life, where I find evidence of an embattled purity regime that has implications beyond the walls of the dominatrix’s “dungeon.” In particular, I argue that pro-dommes’ discourse resonates with Bourdieu’s description of the “anti-‘econ…

  • From Fire and Brimstone to Property Values

    Open Access•Danielle J Lindemann, Danielle Lindemann•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2009•Citada por: 1•Referências: 23

Previous literature on moral reform has, with some notable exceptions, focused on the generation of moralistic sentiment, rather than the rhetoric through which it is deployed. This analysis adds an important coda to this literature by drawing further attention to the distinction between content and style when assessing moral-reform arguments. Examining every argument ( N = 540) made against a pornographic business in Atlanta, Georgia, from 1969 …
