  • Was Silver Fir (Abies alba) Wood Favoured during Early Construction in Austria

Open Access•Elisabeth Wächter, Daniela Festi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Wood…•2025

Conifers were predominantly used historically in timber construction in Austria, with the preferred wood species changing with time and across regions. We investigated the historical preference for silver fir ( Abies alba ) wood in Austrian construction to understand the factors influencing these preferences. We analysed a database containing over 13 916 dendrochronologically dated building samples from Austria, focusing on the period from 1284 t…

  • Historical Wooden Ceilings in Waidhofen an der Ybbs, Austria

Open Access•Alfred Lichtenschopf, Günther Buchinger et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Wood…•2024

Wooden ceilings were among the earliest wooden constructions in wooden houses, and stone and brick buildings. In Austria, a special type of wooden ceiling is known as the Riemenbalkendecke . In Waidhofen, in the Ybbs region, these constructions are decorated with chip carvings, year numbers, and letters. There has been no systematic study on this type of ceiling in Austria. In this study, all houses in Waidhofen an der Ybbs built before 1900 were…

  • Roof Constructions in Austria — An Overview

Open Access•Sebastian Nemestothy, Elisabeth Wächter et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Wood…•2023

The tree-ring lab at BOKU University, Vienna, Austria has been sampling and dating by means of dendrochronology in the eastern part of Austria since 1996. Among other objects, the roof constructions of 982 historical buildings were analysed, resulting in 13 916 samples. The time span extends from the oldest roof truss at a church in Salzburg, dated to 1135, to the youngest in Vienna, dated to 1997. The aim of present paper is to provide an overvi…

  • Oldestwoodenobjects.net – A Compilation of Wooden Goods with Remarkable Longevity

Open Access•Elisabeth Wächter, Michael Grabner et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Wood…•2022

The website oldestwoodenobjects.net serves as a platform for the scientific community to collect, display and share early traces of wood utilization. It also serves educational purposes, to teach a wide audience about how multifunctional and durable wood can be, when wisely used. The collection of objects is large and diverse, ranging from simple tools for hunting, like spears, to musical instruments of the high culture, such as violins. The firs…

  • Wooden Roofing

Open Access•Michael Grabner, Sebastian Nemestothy et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Wood…•2022

Wooden shingles have been known in Europe and other regions worldwide for several thousands of years. They are usually split, and according to handicraft rules, as well as historical literature, a split surface has many advantages. It is more flexible, more elastic, stronger, and less exposed to cupping than a sawn surface because no fibers have been cut. It also follows wood rays; it is more durable than a sawn surface because cut fibers absorb …

  • Wood use and forest management at the Late Bronze Age copper mining site of Prigglitz-Gasteil in the Eastern Alps – A combined anthracological, archaeological, and palynological approach

Open Access•Thorsten Jakobitsch, Silvia Wiesinger et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2022•Citada por: 1•Referências: 18

The Late Bronze Age mining site of Prigglitz-Gasteil provides a wealth of sources of information for the reconstruction of wood use, past vegetation, and forest management at a copper production facility. In this paper we have combined charcoal analyses from domestic and workshop contexts and the investigation of mining timbers found in the backfill of the opencast copper ore mine with the first results from pollen analyses from the nearby Saubac…

  • A Twelve-Hundred-Year Stable Oxygen Isotope Chronology Constructed Using Subfossil Wood From Schwarzensee Lake, Austrian Alps

Open Access•Marzena Kłusek, Michael Grabner et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2022•Referências: 20

This study presents a new stable oxygen isotope chronology, covering the years 800–2000 AD, constructed using modern and subfossil wood derived from trees growing around Lake Schwarzensee in Austria. The climatic signal imparted in the chronology is conditioned mainly by the direct influence of environmental factors on the isotopic signature of source water, which in turn is regulated by evaporation and condensation mechanisms. The second driver …

  • Transport of Timber – A Matter of Ancient Concern

Open Access•Konrad Mayer, Elisabeth Wächter et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Wood…•2021

The prehistoric salt mine in Hallstatt is one of the most prominent archaeological sites in Europe. A huge demand for timber within this complex Bronze Age mining structure required a sophisticated transport system. Although research related to wood transport had been done, further information was needed to reconstruct the whole process of transportation. In this study, wood species identification of wedges, withies, and residues was carried out …

  • Log Transport in the Limestone Alps, Austria

Open Access•Michael Grabner, Elisabeth Wächter et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Wood…•2021

Wood is one of the most important sustainable natural resources. Throughout centuries, large cities as well as regions of very high wood demand (for example, areas of salt production and iron processing) had to be supplied with wood for building and burning. One of the largest forests in Austria can be found in the National Park covering the range of mountains called “Limestone Alps.” Within this region, a wide network of dams was set up to trans…

  • Traces of Transport at the Vienna Hofburg Roof Constructions

Open Access•Elisabeth Wächter, Michael Grabner•ARTICLE•International Journal of Wood…•2021

The Vienna Hofburg is a large complex of buildings of unique historic importance with historical wooden constructions from the 13th to the 20th century. Within its wooden roof constructions, rafting wedges were found, which proves that the timber used did not originate in the surroundings of Vienna but had to be transported to the city. An ascertainment of these residual traces in eleven wings of the Hofburg building was made; five different type…

  • Austrian Logging

Open Access•Sebastian Nemestothy, Michael Grabner•ARTICLE•International Journal of Wood…•2021

Wood in Austria has been an indispensable source of energy, but also, a crucial building material. In the field of dendroarchaeology the timeline between raw material harvest and finalisation of a wooden construction is a crucial piece of puzzle in understanding building history. This paper aims to provide an overview on historical timber supply in Austria by examining the felling and debarking methods, as recorded in old literature and, from the…

  • Years of environmental sustainability in the large-scale alpine mining district of Hallstatt, Austria

Open Access•Daniela Festi, Daniel Brandner et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2020•Citada por: 3•Referências: 17

Throughout time, salt has played a crucial role in societies representing one of the most precious natural raw materials that can be extracted from the environment. The Austrian Alps are home to the world’s oldest and extensively studied record of large-scale underground salt mining: the UNESCO World Heritage site Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut. In this study, we focus for the first time on the impact that the salt extraction had on the vegeta…

  • X-ray Densitometry of Norway Spruce Subfossil Wood From the Austrian Alps

    Marzena Kłusek, Michael Grabner•ARTICLE•Tree-Ring Research•2016

The processing of subfossil wood poses some difficulties in densitometric research. Problems arise because of the physio-chemical changes of wood occurring in the sedimentation environment. Subfossil wood modification can result from the uptake of mineral and organic substances into the wood tissue. It can also occur as the effect of microbiological degradation of wood. The goal of this study was to identify the appropriate method of subfossil wo…

  • Luminescence dating of historical fluvial deposits from the Danube and Ebro

Open Access•Markus Fiebig, Frank Preusser et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2009•Citada por: 2•Referências: 8

The validity of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) has been tested on known‐age (historical) fluvial deposits along the rivers Danube (Austria) and Ebro (Spain). As partial bleaching of the OSL signal prior to deposition can interfere with correct age estimates, different approaches to extracting the dose accumulated during burial are compared. Using the finite mixture model gave OSL ages that are internally as well as stratigraphically cons…

  • Combined Techniques to Date the First Turkish Bridge Over the Tisza River, Hungary

Open Access•Zsuzsanna Szántó, Róbert Kertész et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•Referências: 4

Given the fluctuating nature of the radiocarbon calibration curve, the precision of single 14 C dates on the calendar timescale is limited. However, 14 C dating combined with dendrochronology enabled us to date timbers found in the Tisza River, Hungary, during the dry period of summer 2003. Routine preparation of wood samples gave 14 C results spread over 4 centuries. By extracting alpha-cellulose from the samples, 2 distinct and relatively narro…
