A Prospective Comparison of Bipolar I and II Subjects With and Without Comorbid Alcohol Dependence From the Coga Dataset
Objective: Comorbidity of alcohol use disorders in bipolar subjects is high as indicated by epidemiological and clinical studies. Though a more severe course of bipolar disorder in subjects with comorbid alcohol dependence has been reported, fewer studies considered the longitudinal course of alcohol dependence in bipolar subjects and the prospective course of comorbid bipolar II subjects. Beside baseline analysis, longitudinal data of the COGA (…

An examination of adolescent coping typologies and young adult alcohol use in a high-risk sample
The primary purpose of this study was to explore whether coping typologies during adolescence predict alcohol use and abuse during early adulthood. The roles played by paternal substance dependence and gender in this relationship also were examined. The sample included 240 15–19-year-old adolescents and their fathers, all of whom were followed-up five years later. Results from K-means cluster analyses revealed four coping clusters. Cluster 1 indi…
Predictors of Sexual Debut at Age 16 or Younger
Under the Influence of Genetics
This article describes both sociological and genetic theories of illness causation and derives propositions expected under each and under a transdisciplinary theoretical frame. The authors draw propositions from three theories -- fundamental causes, social stress processes, and social safety net theories -- and tailor hypotheses to the case of alcohol dependence. Analyses of a later wave of the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism re…
Factors affecting entry into substance abuse treatment
This article reports the results of an investigation of alcohol treatment among Alaska Natives admitted to treatment in Anchorage, Alaska. The time between the age at which they were diagnosed as alcohol dependent and first treatment was similar for men and women. Women were more likely to be parents and reported more contact with health and mental health providers, but these factors were not associated with elapsed time to alcoholism treatment; …
Predictors of Substance Abuse and Affective Diagnoses
Discriminant function analyses were employed among adult offspring of alcoholics family history positive [FH+]; n = 85) and offspring of nonalcoholics (family history negative[FH-1; n = 68) to determine whether characteristics of the individual and the context predict substance abuse or dependence or affective diagnoses. As expected, sex was a significant predictor, with men being more likely to have received a diagnosis for substance problems an…

Problem boys in young adulthood
Problem children's adult adjustment predicted from teachers' ratings
Teacher ratings of 187 children seen at a guidance clinic are compared to interview-based ratings of social adjustment nine to fifteen years later. Children described as failing to get along with others are seen to be relatively disturbed at follow-up, and differences are found between teacher-rated behavior patterns relating to later social adjustment for boys and those for girls. It is concluded that teacher ratings can be useful predictors of …
