Work-Based Learning and Early Career Outcomes
Prior research has linked internships to career benefits for students. But are the benefits we see due to the internship itself or to other characteristics of students that make them both more likely to secure an internship and more likely to get a higher paying job after graduation? And do other forms of work-based learning also convey career benefits? In this study, we use a matching design on restricted-access data from the National Center for…
Perceived Racial Misclassification Among Native American and Alaska Native College Students
Measurement invariance of the revised multigroup ethnic identity measure among a national sample of Native American and Alaska Native college students
These findings support that, at least in part, the meaning and configuration of ERI, as measured by the MEIM-R, differ slightly for NA/AN communities based on where individuals grew up and whether they identify as Multiracial. Scholars using the MEIM-R should account for these within-group differences when conducting research with NA/AN communities. Further research is necessary to holistically understand and operationalize important and salient …
The Impact of Downward Classism on Social Class Concealment Among College Students Who Are Low-Income
The Impact of Downward Classism on Social Class Concealment Among College Students Who Are Low-Income Mun Yuk Chin (bio), Jay Jeffries (bio), and Mindi N. Thompson (bio) Given the privileging of white, middle-class norms in higher education, students who are low-income encounter classism in college (e.g., Cattaneo et al., 2019). Specifically, these students experience downward classism as posited by the social class worldview model (SCWM) in the …

Guidelines for psychological practice for people with low-income and economic marginalization
This is a summary of the guidelines for working with low-income and economically marginalized (LIEM) people developed by the American Psychological Association (APA) task force and approved by the APA Council of Representatives. The task force, consisting of psychologists from a range of psychological specialties and both practice and educational settings, created guidelines in four main categories: Education and Training, Health Disparities, Tre…
Clinical Experiences With Clients Who Are Low-Income
The experiences of nine licensed mental health practitioners regarding their work with clients from low-income backgrounds were examined utilizing grounded theory methodology. Themes that emerged from the semi-structured interviews highlighted a rich narrative that portrayed the work as both deeply satisfying and inherently complex. Participants described the personal nature of this work, including countertransference elicited because of their ow…
Native American undergraduate students' persistence intentions
Attending to persistence intentions among Native American students enrolled in institutions of higher education is critical, given low retention rates. The purpose of the study was twofold: (a) we developed and examined the psychometric properties of a new measure, the Native American Collective Pursuits of Education (NACOPE), and (b) we explored persistence attitudes among 156 Native American students using Gloria and Rodriguez's (2000) psychoso…
Social Status Identity
This study extended the literature on potential antecedents and outcomes of perceived social status, or differential status identity (DSI). Fouad and Brown’s DSI was used as a conceptual lens for examining the relation of supports and barriers to an individual’s perceived social status and subsequent career indecisiveness and career decision self-efficacy. Results from a path model using 299 diverse undergraduate students provided general support…
A training framework and follow-up observations for multiculturally inclusive teaching
The authors present a theoretically and empirically grounded training for multiculturally inclusive teaching for new instructors. After implementing this training, qualitative data were gathered from instructors to identify their experience of the training and concerns related to incorporating issues of diversity into their classrooms (Study 1). At the end of the semester immediately following the training, quantitative data were gathered from in…
Exploration and Validation of the Differential Status Identity Scale
In response to the developing critique of traditional sociological measures of social class, the Differential Status Identity Scale (DSIS) was developed. The DSIS is a measure designed to tap the psychological impact on the individual of belonging to a particular social status. Internal consistency reliability and construct, convergent, and criterion validity of the DSIS were examined for a sample of 454 college students. The present data lent mu…
