  • Languages Across Boundaries

  • Clause Combining in Otomi before and after contact with Spanish

    Open Access•Dik Bakker, Ewald Hekking•ARTICLE•Linguistic Discovery•2012

In this contribution, we explore two hypotheses with respect to clause combining. The first one is the assumption that languages with a mainly spoken tradition explicitly code clause relations, both coordination and subordination, to a lesser extent than languages with a long written tradition. And secondly, in case of contact between two such languages, with the latter one in a dominant position, and a sufficient level of bilingualism, we expect…

  • Automated Dating of the World's Language Families Based on Lexical Similarity

    Eric W Holman, Cecil H Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2011•Citada por: 33•Referências: 40

This paper describes a computerized alternative to glottochronology for estimating elapsed time since parent languages diverged into daughter languages. The method, developed by the Automated Similarity Judgment Program (ASJP) consortium, is different from glottochronology in four major respects: (1) it is automated and thus is more objective, (2) it applies a uniform analytical approach to a single database of worldwide languages, (3) it is base…

  • Adding typology to lexicostatistics

    Open Access•Dik Bakker, André Müller et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Typology•2009•Citada por: 11•Referências: 3

The ASJP project aims at establishing relationships between languages on the basis of the Swadesh word list. For this purpose, lists have been collected and phonologically transcribed for almost 3,500 languages. Using a method based on the algorithm proposed by Levenshtein (Cybernetics and Control Theory 10: 707-710, 1966), a custom-made computer program calculates the distances between all pairs of languages in the database. Standard software is…

  • Bound person forms in ditransitive clauses revisited

Anna Siewierska, Dik Bakker•ARTICLE•Functions of Language•2007

In a recent article Gensler (2003) has argued that little can be said about the ordering of bound person markers of the T(heme) and R(ecipient) relative to each other or relative to the verb stem apart from the fact that the outer markers are likely to be the result of a second-level cliticization process. We take issue with this claim and document that quite successful predictions with respect to the ordering of the T and R markers can be made o…

  • Inclusive and exclusive in free and bound person forms

    Anna Siewierska, Dik Bakker•CHAPTER•Clusivity•2005

  • The Distribution of Subject and Object Agreement and Word Order Type

Anna Siewierska, Dik Bakker•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•1996

The article examines the distribution and formal realization of Subject and Object agreement markers in different word order types on the basis of a sample of 237 languages. Special attention is paid to the genetic and areal stratification of agreement markers and the impact of these two parameters on the relationship between agreement and word order type emerging from this investigation as opposed to those of previous studies, especially that of…

  • A Method of Language Sampling

Jan Rijkhoff, Dik Bakker et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•1993

In recent years more attention is being paid to the quality of language samples in typological work. Without an adequate sampling strategy, samples may suffer from various kinds of bias. In this article we propose a sampling method in which the genetic criterion is taken as the most important: samples created with this method will reflect optimally the diversity of the languages of the world. On the basis of the internal structure of each genetic…
