  • Verb‐echo answers in Japanese do not call for syntactic head movement

    Open Access•Tomoya Tanabe, Ryota Kobayashi•ARTICLE•Studia Linguistica•2024

This paper tackles the issue of whether syntactic head movement exists in Japanese. Sato & Hayashi (2018) and Sato & Maeda (2021) propose that Verb‐Echo Answers ( VEAs ), an instance of fragment answers , in Japanese are derived via the so‐called Verb‐stranding TP‐Ellipsis ( VTPE ; i.e., TP‐ellipsis accompanied by verb‐raising to C), thereby claiming that head movement exists in Japanese as a syntactic operation. In response, this paper argues th…

  • Case report

Open Access•Takaki Akahane, Naomi Takahashi et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

Recoverin is a neuron-specific calcium-binding protein that is mainly located in the retina and pineal gland. Few reports have described patients with anti-recoverin antibody-positive encephalitis, and no cases of psychosis associated with this encephalitis have been reported. We report a patient with anti-recoverin antibody-positive encephalitis with Cotard and Capgras delusions who was successfully treated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). …

  • Arguments against head‐stranding ellipsis in Japanese

    Open Access•Tomoya Tanabe, Ryota Kobayashi•ARTICLE•Syntax•2024•Referências: 7

Whether syntactic head movement exists in Japanese has been hotly debated because of the strictly head‐final character of the language. This paper addresses this issue, focusing on data regarding null adjuncts. We demonstrate that the head‐stranding ellipsis (HSE) analysis of null adjuncts is not conclusive. To achieve this, we show that null adjuncts are more widely observed than the HSE analysis predicts. Specifically, we provide a new set of d…

  • Get the Picture

Open Access•Hiroki Horinouchi, Xinyi Liu et al.•ARTICLE•WORD•2024•Referências: 81

Associative learning provides a common substrate for studying learning and memory in language sciences. Studies on recognition memory tasks have found higher proportions of homonyms relative to non-homonyms, indicating a preference or optimum in word learning behavior. This study sought to identify the differences between associative learning for a new word form (pseudowords) and multiple referents (MR) as homonyms and single referents (SR) as no…

  • Instrumental Motives in Emotion Regulation of One’s Own and Others’ Anger

    Open Access•Yuki Nozaki, Ryota Kobayashi•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2024•Referências: 54

Instrumental motives, such as increasing negative emotions to facilitate performance, are one of the primary motives in regulating one’s own emotions (i.e., intrinsic emotion regulation) and others’ emotions (i.e., extrinsic emotion regulation). However, most instrumental emotion regulation research has been conducted in Western countries, even though desired emotions, such as anger, could vary across Western and Eastern cultures. This research i…

  • On the verb-raising analysis of non-constituent coordination in Japanese

Ryota Kobayashi, Ryoichiro Kobayashi•ARTICLE•The Linguistic Review•2023

This study argues against the verb-raising analysis of Japanese Non-Constituent Coordination (NCC), and consequently supports an alternative analysis with no recourse to verb movement in Narrow Syntax. I show that the verb-raising analysis under-generates regarding VP-fronting in Japanese. Furthermore, I point out that this analysis makes wrong predictions about the scope between heads and elements inside NCC. I conclude that there is no syntacti…

  • Is it syntactic or pragmatic

    Open Access•Ryota Kobayashi•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics 語言暨語言學•2022

The main aim of this study is to reconsider Tomioka’s (2007) pragmatic account of the lf -intervention effects (IE), and to claim that Polarity Sensitive Items ( psi s) are genuine syntactic interveners. I will examine the parallelism among psi s in IE configurations, which is distinct from other interveners, and further claim that the study of IE should not be monolithic, but hybrid: Syntactic lf -interveners ( psi s), blocking scopal interactio…

  • Case Report

Open Access•Akihito Suzuki, Ryota Kobayashi et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Akathisia, which characterized by subjective restlessness and objective hyperactivity, is induced mostly by antipsychotics and antidepressants. Chronic akathisia is defined as persistence of symptoms for more than 3 months. The pathophysiology of chronic akathisia remains unclear. This report describes a depressed patient, a 66-year-old woman with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder, with chronic akathisia. Her regional cerebral blood flow (…

  • Alternating conj/disjunctions

Open Access•Ryan Smith, Ryan Walter Smith et al.•ARTICLE•ZAS Papers in Linguistics•2018

This paper investigates the interpretation of Japanese -toka and -tari, two nonexhaustiveparticles that receive conjunctive interpretations in upward-entailingenvironments, but disjunctive interpretations in downward-entailing and question contexts. We analyze -toka and -tari as items that introduce unstructured sets of alternatives in aHamblin-style alternative semantics (Hamblin, 1973; Kratzer and Shimoyama, 2002), andderive their conjunctive an…
