The Anti-Politics of Inclusion
This article examines volunteer engagement with newcomers in Norway following increased arrivals in 2015, through which locals wished to help the newly arrived settle into Norwegian society. I explore why some volunteers described these activities as ‘apolitical’, sometimes actively silencing topics connected to politics and religion. Renegotiating Obligations through Migration
This article explores the interplay between spatial and social distance and financial obligations and goals in the context of migration. On the basis of an ethnographic study of Senegalese migration to Spain, it discusses the idea that distance may be partly sought to gain leverage in renegotiating responses to redistributive demands and responsibilities that come at odds with goals of accumulation and investment. In recent years, tens of thousands of young Africans have left the shores of Senegal and other West African countries in small boats headed for Spain's Canary Islands. This article addresses the management of unauthorised migration from Africa to Europe. We review eight policy measures and explore how they relate to prominent policy narratives, centred on security, co-operation and protection of migrants.
